In the scence where Jenny and the Kidsgo and buy clothes, Pretty Woman plays, but there was this new song in tonights airing! Do companies need to purchase music rights when they air a film? Also it felt like some stuff was cut out.
You noticed that too! My sister thought I was going crazy. I was sure that they always played Pretty Woman there. This new song did not work as well. Anyway, I figure it has something to do with the music rights, but it's kinda weird because I watch this movie every time it comes on ABC Family, and I've never noticed that the song had been changed before. Strange.
hmmm. last time I watched it was in about 2004 and Pretty Woman still played, it also seemed longer, darn! ABC Family totally ruins every solid thing Fox Family made, but they still make some good stuff.
The only place this DVD can currently be purchased is Australia, seriously, but since ABC Family is making a 3rd one (God Help Us) they might release all three as a set.
so i'm not going insane! I just actually saw the movie "Pretty Woman" a few days ago, and noticed there was a scene where Julia Roberts is buying and trying on clothes, to the music of Pretty Woman...I wonder if perhaps this caused problems for Au Pair...which really makes no sense, but is just a guess...I agree, the new song didn't work as well, the Pretty Woman part always made me smile
yeah it does suck and i remember that song that goes "Gonna get dressed for a wedding...gonna get married" played in the second one where the kids are planning Jenny's big wedding got switched too!!! it juss kills the magic...
the new song that is played, messes up the scene. Since the entire scene is cued to Pretty Women. So the cues where Jenny is modelling the clothes, are completely off. I love this movie though!
Sure, if you use a piece of music - or anything else that has a copyright on it - you need to ask permission, and often that means you have to pay money for it. What's strange, though, is that one would expect the permission to use some music in a movie to be granted without time limit, so there wouldn't be a need to change the soundtrack later. But that seems to have happened here.
One wonders what happened. If "Pretty Woman" had come out after "Au Pair" I could see that the duplicity was seen as potentially embarrassing. But "Pretty Woman" was released 1990 and "Au Pair" only in 1999. So the Julia Roberts scene already existed when they filmed "Au Pair". In which case I would expect them not to use "Pretty Woman" in the first place.
But the best of all: "Au pair" was aired on a German TV channel (RTL) today - 30 January 2011 - dubbed in German and with the "Pretty Woman" scene firmly in place, music and all.
Update - for those that are interested: Today. 5 February 2012, the movie aired again on RTL with "Pretty Woman" still very much in place. I wonder if the restriction is of a regional nature or if RTL just slipped by or if they just had the right kind of fine print in their agreement to cover them.
I just wish someone in the know would shed some light on this ...
