gay interest?

Why is that category there? Yeah, I guess the guys were close, but they weren't gay. I certainly didn't pick up on any subtext either.

I was wondering the same thing. I recently re-watched the movie and I did notice something that I hadn't noticed before. When they were taping themselves on the trip, the kids were asking questions to each other. Someone asks Steven about whether he had hooked up with a girl on the trip, then talk continues about who likes who. The camera goes to a close up of Jake and Steven asks "who do you love?". Jake pauses, smiles and says "I wonder" in a very playful, teasing manner. Made me kind of wonder if he had a crush of some sorts on Steven. Not necessarily sexual, even. Maybe he just admired him and his life. Not sure if this helps, but it was the only moment in the film that I would consider as "gay subtext".

I know this is pretty late, but Jake actually says "Luanda" which is his girlfriend's name.

There are a few moments where I wondered if they were going to go down the 'exploration of sexuality' route, but I actually found it quite refreshing that they showed two men/boys being affectionate and cuddly and it not being because they were gay. It so rare to see affection being portrayed as showing love for someone rather than wanting to sleep with someone and I liked that.
