hi everyone -

just a quick query....im in the process of gettign this and reliving a part of my childhood viewing SBS (in australia) *yes :)*

Anyway , does anyone know any other "one-off's" similar to this in experimental animation ?

One thing in particular....if anyone knows....
A animation when i was younger - portyayed a strange empty world , and these aardvark type animal with a small boy as a friend. They travelled through this empty city and were chased by a "pied piper" type man ?!?

I have no idea lol and ive been day dreaming on and off about this for the last 10 odd years of my life ! Any help ?!thanks !

Hey man, I can't help you with the Aardvark thing, but if you liked Neo Tokyo then you MUST go get Memories http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113799/ and Robot Carnival http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093871/

Shouldn't be too hard to find, the Anime flows like wine here in Australia.

What you want to look for is:

Nekojiru-So (Cat-Soup)
Memories (also a trilogy of shorts)
Grasshoppa DVD magazines vol 1-4 (only in Region2 Yesasia.com has them. It is a dvd magazine with shorts on it: each volume also has one by Studio 4C)
Noiseman Sound Insect (there is only ONE very rare subbed dvd release (region 2 Japan) but there are fansubs on the net). It was done by the same guy who did the story about the little girl (Koji Morimoto, who was also responsible for the 'Beyond' segment of the Animatrix).

What I also like is Trava Fist Planet (by the same guys who did the Runner segment on Animatrix). It is part of Grasshoppa but they also released a seperate dvd that collects al 4 segments and turns them into one 40 minute movie.

Dead Leaves is also very nice. 50 minutes. Kakurenbo will be out soon too.

That is about what I'd reccommend you.

I know it's years ago but I'm not sure what's meant by "the story about the little girl," could you be getting Atsuko Fukushima and Kôji Morimoto mixed up? They're married and often work together now but it's Fukushima who's largely responsible for the look of Ôtomo's Robot Carnival segment and Rintarô's "Labyrinth * labyrinthos" in this, as character designer and animation director, while Morimoto is one of the animators of Ôtomo's "Order to Stop Construction".

And Time Masters/Le Maîtres du temps now has an extras and English dub-lacking but excellent A/V quality English subbed DVD in the UK, PAL and region-free (despite what the printing on the box and disc and Amazon will tell you). I will also slip in a recommendation for Studio 4ºC's Fluximation videos commissioned to promote Utada's Exodus; only available online and at low resolution now but some from the likes of Fukushima and Morimoto worth seeing. Also, since all this was posted, there's now a US DVD release of Kôji Yamamura's films, an indie who, with Fukushima, Morimoto and Hiroyuki Imaishi on the studio side serve to bridge the two so often and disappointingly separate worlds. Oh, and the Studio Kajino videos for the band capsule; refined and rounder than what has been previously mentioned but interesting for showing what was at the time a strikingly different side of Studio Ghibli, working under that pseudonym.

I think I know which one you are looking for!
It's called "Time Masters", and it's available from Netflix.
I think Mobius did some of the artwork.
I hope that helps.

The only ones I know of which haven't been mentioned are:

The Cockpit
and
Winter Days (Fuyu No Hi)

Good hunting.

Robot Carnival. The guy who did the Running Man segment did one of the scenes. Katsuhiro Otomo did the opening and closing.
