Internet, but no cellphones???

The lead character says something about the internet was a hairspray last time I went for a job interview, so the internet was around. But she didn't have a cellphone.

Weren't they out around the same time?

No? Yes?

Cell phones didn't become really common until around 2000 or so. Before that, it wasn't at all unusual to not carry a cell phone; this movie was released in 1999. (For reference, I'm pretty technically inclined and I got my first cell phone in 1999, and that was in California, where they were far more common than in most of the rest of the country.) So no, not at all weird to imagine that a middle-aged woman in the suburbs in 1999 wouldn't have a cell phone.

UHHHHH!!!! 😒

A: this was back in 1999 and cell phones were still in the 'Zack Morris' style.

B: being 1999, cell phone service was practically non existent.

C: she was on a desolate road in a very woodsy area. I used to live in Northern Westchester and we had OKAY [not perfect] service on 684. Once you exited... forget it. NO cell service at all. still to this day... jack service.

Oh God. Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more.
