American perception of Europe

It is so sad to know that this movie was made in European production. It is so obvious that the target audience is USA, and as most modern European authors, people who made this movie have the only aim to be called to Hollywood.

It is not only language, though isn't it extremely ridiculous that in European movie settled in European town you can't hear a single non-English word?

But more than language I noticed the typical American way how they see Europe. Police is slow and ineffective, life is dangerous, towns are dirty, people on drugs are everywhere and so are the drugs, hotel stuff doesn't care much for anything (though it is a tourist destination)... the conclusion: don't go to Europe, stay in USA.

And children, that USA seems to be especially sensitive about, are shown as a prey for Europeans: they ignore them and don't care (in hotel), they want to sexually abuse them, they want them to use or real drugs, they want to beat them (policeman!)... If you even decide to go to Europe, don't ever take your children! Americans have always found Europeans perverted (just check the rating of European movies and compare them to similar Hollywood ones), and movies like this only confirm their prejudices.

And in the end of the movie, after we've seen how horrific, appalling, repugnant and disgustful this European town is, Kathryn decides to stay there for holiday, because she's checked and found that the other towns are even worse!

Now, for a conclusion... I live in Europe, I've recently been to Amsterdam, I've traveled to some other European and non-European destinations. And I must say that, though Amsterdam is considered a metropolis of drugs and prostitution, with so many foreigners, hobos, addicts on its streets, I haven't been warned to avoid certain streets or districts, I have seen people of all ages and races walking all around during early or late hours without discomfort, let alone fear on their faces - the only thing I was suggested is not to use photo in "red lights district" (guess you all know what it is). But I wasn't suggested not to have it because someone might steel it or attack me. And I have seen lawyers' and doctor's offices in the same district, among windows with females on their job, I have seen children playing around like in any other district or any other European city. How often do you see children playing in non-European streets and parks, regardless of the district? But I do remember precise suggestions outside Europe telling not only which streets are safe, but also what side of the street one should take at what part of the day. And I have never seen so many high walls around houses, neither in Netherlands nor elsewhere in middle Europe as can be seen in some parts of the world that find Europe so dangerous and immoral. So, it is more than clear who (and what) is this movie made for.

The worst part of Amsterdam would be considered a pretty cool place in most countries on earth.

So yeah, there's an agenda. Unfortunately there are way too many of those today, and this goes back to the beginning of cinema.

American filmmakers should stop the euro trashy movies and exploit locations like Africa and Haiti which are truly frightening in their own special ways. They did do Mexico, though.

You could make a simple documentary in those places and it would still be a horror movie.

The most recent movie that made me 'scared of Europe' was 'Spoorloos'. That and 'Irreversible'. I think that says it all.

who cares it's a d**ng movie! jeeze. look at the plot and content. would you buy this movie's story if it was all bubbly cafe's and flower markets?

i am an American and i've lived in europe for many years now (currently in Amsterdam) and there are closed minded bigoted individuals on all sides of the borders I have been on, sorry its not a strictly an American thing being propagated by some hollywood agenda.

people love to bash hollywood movies and put them in a bad light, but they are just movies.. for entertainment. THIS ONE is an action thriller with a pretty dark plot and all those 'negative' portrayals you pointed out are pretty much standard fare for all movies in the genre, not my cup of tea, but I am interested in the scenery so I watch anyway. There are other movies that portray the city in a more friendly and fun way... why? Because that is the tone of the film, but not this one..... get it...

how about 'Amsterdamned'? a Dutch made film in Amsterdam about a murder and the darker side of the city...if I go look at that movies message board will I see a similiar post about that movie from you??
