a story with a hole in the middle

can you help me find the name of a film. i saw it over 15 years ago and can rember only a few things about it. it was a european film. i think spanish but perhaps not. the story involved a guy having a one night stand on a beach. subsequently this leads to a child. he only finds out about his child years later and has not know her/him long when the child is attacked and killed by a dog. then the story has a hole in the middle. the story goes back through time to give an alterative ending. does this sound familiar? let me know. thanks!
