No chemistry... Typical of Almodovar...

I don't hate Almodovar, but I do believe his films are too mediocre for the acclaim they get.

What really bothers me about his films (and particulary this one) is that characters just meet up randomly, and instantly create a deep bond for no particular reason at all... the scenes don't show any chemistry at all between the characters, they just befriend because the plot demands so.

I guess genuine and disinterested friendships might sprout at times... but particulary, I believe it is quite uncommon.

I think there might be a cultural ineptitude on your part OP.

For a start, many of the characters, like the nun, are friends of friends.

But for characters that do just meet "out of the blue" so to speak, living in Barcelona, and indeed many similar cities, relationships can often form like that.

Manuela is on a mission, and she's inevitably going to meet people and make some very close ties.

Limit of the Willing Suspension of Disbelief: directly proportional to its awesomeness.

Thank you so much, OP. Thank you for making that clear and for bringing it up.
That was one of the things that bothered me the most in this movie. She just met the nun, and the next thing she's interested in knowing about her pregnancy, and then she's moving in with her. AND THEN WHAT?? She's adopting her baby, doesn't that seem a little bit fast ?
I know they may be friends that fast, but it wasn't credible. Mean girls on the other hand had characters who became friends fast enough in the first 10 minutes, and guess what? I kinda got it, and took it that well.
Besides, the movie wasn't that poignant. It was so manipulative.
