This IS NOT a good movie

I consider myself to be a moviefreak, I see all kinds of movies: Spirited Away, Oldboy, Amelie From Montemarte, Mysterious Skin, Godfather, The Downfall and also a lot of "slow movies" (just like this: Le Vita e bella, Citizen Kane, Gosford Park and The Hours.. I watch everything and I know when I see a good movie.

Before watching "Todo Sobre Mi madre" I had pretty high expectations, they were not fulfilled.

This was a crappy movie, end of story. Sure the acting was good and the music/score were faboulus. But it was just so BORING! And all the plot holes.....

If you haven´t seen this movie, don´t waste your time.

I don't think same as you. I loved todo sobre mi madre.

and it's a movie that I highly recomend.

Haha.

Good one, Miguel_Cane.

You should know that not all foreign films are the same. The worse mistake any movie goer could have is having high expectations. If someone goes into a movie thinking they are gonna see blood and guts and leave they are obviously going to be dissapointed because of the lack of blood and guts. If you were familiar with Pedro Almodovar's work, you should know that his movies are slow pace for a reason. I would like to know what you found boring about a boy's sudden death, a nun sleeping with a man with tits, prostitues playing patty cake on the street, agrado and the hilarious things that come out of her mouth, the boys father being a tranvestite, the crazy actresses in the spanish version of "a streetcar named desire", the subtle blend of comedy and drama. WHERE ELSE ARE YOU GOING TO SEE STUFF LIKE THAT?

Yo hablo español. Eso puede ser porque lo disfrute tanto. Pero tambien eh visto peliculaa en frances y las disfruto igual. No critiques lo que no entiendes. Puede ser que no te guste el director. Te recomiendo Talk to Her si quieres algo mas. Dicen que Bad Education es bien fuerte. Miralo a ver que piensas.

I'm human and I need to be loved.

I agree with polo_nordic, this IS NOT a good movie, almodovar is sooo overated I don't know why people like this film I found it pointless and really stupid

reply

admitedly i'm not an almodovar fan. his movies (like el gato said before) are slow-paced and almost always include transvestites and weird characters which i don't relate to in any way. i enjoy the dialogue because he's got a wicked sense of humour, but i tend to fidgit whilst watching his movies (never a good sign.)
ok so almodovar is not my cup of tea, and i sometimes have to force myself to sit through the whole movie, but i'd never say this movie or his movies are BAD MOVIES which noone should bother seeing. how on earth can i expect myself to fall fanatically in love with transvestites running about in spain. i'm not resuming almodovar to trannies, but as i said, he's not my cup of tea, but i'm not going to run around telling people DON'T see this movie.
i also wonder why so many people love him, but if you don't understand the context of spain, i don't think you can really appreciate him .. and i obviously don't understand the context ;p but at least he's doing things that NOONE else is doing, you can give him that.

reply

Scarlett, I don;t think that you need to be a Spaniard or understand Spain in order to "get" this film. The themes that Almodovar likes to explore, in this movie and in Talk to Her are universal themes. All of his characters have an overwhelming need/desire to be connected to others as well as to their inner self.

Those themes transcend national boundaries.

I agree with the other points of your post.

reply

that's absoolutely true, as i said my friend adores almodovar, and he hasn't even been to spain. i'm just saying that we tend to appreciate a movie even more when it's dealing with a culture we are aware of, like those little subtlelties that just shout spain, but that i would never pick up on..
obviously his themes are universal themes, his movies aren't about trannies as such but human relationships and as you said, how they all interconnect with each other.

Can you stop saying "trannies" - it's really offensive. It's like calling an African-American person the "n" word!

reply

i'm sorry you think it has pejorative connotations. i didn't mean it like that, i think they're great.
i'm not one of those bible thumping a-holes out there who condemns anything that isn't woman+man. variety is the spice of life.
i'd say it was more like calling an africanamerican a black..which isn't all that far from the truth.
will be more careful for your sensitive eyes though.

reply

I think it's the same as the "N" word - we might use it ironically about ourselves, but it is deeply offensive for someone else to use it.

Take care :)

Uh, I know trannies who use the word "trannies". It is not an insult and whoever gets offended by that word is an uptight tw*at.

Perhaps you should try calling some African-American people the "N" word, and you can see just how far your attitude gets you.

Comparing the word "tranny" to the N-word just shows how out of touch you really are. They are not even in the same UNIVERSE, okay? Who the hell calls someone a tranny as an insult? NOBODY! It's short for transsexual.

And the "N" word is an alternate form of the word negro, which describes someone from Africa. The "N" word is used to belittle and dehumanise people of African racial background, and in exactly the same way "trannie" is used to belittle and dehumanise women of transsexual background.

The fact that you feel you can sit there and argue the point is outrageous, and I'm beginning to take you for a troll. I'm telling you it is extremely rude and offensive. Accept it and stop using such dismissive, humiliating language... Do you sit there arguing with people of African background that you don't consider "N" offensive, so you're going to call them that? Absolutely ridiculous!!

No, I would not, but I have never had a transsexual tell me to stop saying "tranny". Not that I use the word all that much anyway. Actually this is the first time I can recall using it. I just think you are being much too sensitive. I'm gay and I don't care if people say "fag" if they aren't using it negatively.

Well, you can say that about yourself, but stop bloody well using a term of abuse against me and telling me you don't consider it so. I've told you multiple times that it is a dehumanising, offensive word - accept it and move on, don't keep arguing the point!!!!

I am a transsexual. Please do not use that word when referring to trannsexual women or men. It is not short for trannsexual, it is short for transvestite, and confusing the two is naive and ignorant. As a fellow member of the LGBT community, you should know better. Have a nice day.

Im not from Spain and i love Almodovar... I dont think you have to understand the life in Madrid, I totally disagree with that...
Is like saying you have to understand France to like a fench movie... Italy, italian, etc etc etc...

I think thats good about movies... and in fact, Ive lived in several cities and Im sure, everywhere Ive been there were all kind of people... just like the caracthers in Almodovars movies.

Sidney

i'm saying that when a movie depicts a certain culture in a certain country, a foreigner is likely to miss out on some of the subtleties. not that they can't appreciate and laugh at the movies, they're very entertaining, but that SOME jokes and scenes and references and you know..tiny little things, may be hilarious to a spaniard (and even more so to someone who knows the gay/transexual/transvestite scene) and that i might not understand.
it's like..that stupid movie my fat greek wedding (or whatever it was called) ..you can't shout at someone who didn't find the movie funny and call him close minded. the movie was very specific. everyone enjoys it, but only greeks (or whatever) will understand every-single-thing in the movie.
people love to nitpick a general non-hurtful comment and try to make it seem like i'm attacking almodovar because he has transexuals/transvestites/homosexuals in his movies.
n'importe quoi.

universal themes..yes that goes without saying.
i was talking about cultural references being inaccessible to non-spaniards.
themes of love betrayal passion friendship etc are always understandable.

I don't think this movie is slow paced. Try Andrei Tarkovsky, Abbas Kiarostami, etc

reply

Well, I don't know about all that, and yeah, it was a little slow, but it was one of the few movies that made this girly cry. So I've got to give 'em props.

reply

[deleted]

I love this film. It is not slow, it is carried by your personal emotional responses to the characters. It is wonderful.

Le Vita e bella is banal, try The Train of Life.

reply

We've been studying this film for my film studies course and I must say, despite going through all the themes and context I still don't think that much of it. I can see why people would think he is a talented director and he clearly has his own cinematic and near artistic style going on here.....but I do think this film is is weak :| not terrible, just nothing special

reply

Yes. The fact that you have seen not only Amelie, and Spirited Away, but also Oldboy, means that you are higher even than the R. Eberts and AO Scotts -- your 'opinion', if we can even call a mere flippant fragment of a sentence a complete opinion, stands as a fact to be understood and accepted without even there slightest hint of a real argument/explanation/justification of your view.

We must respect likes... but, come on you must to be crazy... please, why you dont see it again but this time be open to the movie and the message of all that people that do it, not to you´re thinks ... and maybe you understand why much people, like me, love this movie.

By the way, "Todo sobre mi madre" is one of my 10 favorites movies in this moment.
