QaF ending - Romantics vs. Realists

Hey all. I've just finished to watch this lovely series, and since I'm doing some reasearch on how gay romances are portraited on TV and in movies I was interested in reading what you guys fans of the show thought about the series ending.

First of all, let me say that I loved the show and completely rooted for Vince all the time (I want somebody like him in my life, seriously) and I wanted to believe in Vince and Stuart as a real couple - I thought the finale was perfect, the only thing I missed was a long, glorious kiss - but then I kept thinking about it and even the hopeless romantic in me realized that their relationship was so rooted and deep that it went well beyond mere passion. The mutual understanding they seem to share at the end, the acceptation of each other's flaws, the realization that maybe they're both good enough to make each other happy, that subtle touch of the hands and the way they seem to know exactly what they're doing...everything was more convincing, IMO, for a real development of their love story than any kiss would have been.

But then I started wondering if the lack of a more sensationally and traditionally romantic ending could have led some to believe that the bitter truth behind the series' ending is that Vince has surely gained some respect for himself, but in the end he keeps following Stuart, taking part in his scoundrel ways but still far from being the one to truly and wholly capture Stuart's heart, mind and...erogenous parts. It's a sad reading of the whole show, IMO, mainly because, as I said, I'm hopelessly and idiotically romantic. And I love Vince. He needs to be happy :P

So, I just wanted to ask for your opinions and what makes you read the finale in one way or another. I will probably still think of it my own way, LOL, because after so many sad and heartbreaking gay films I've seen for my research I want a good and happy ending, dammit :P But, I'm interested in reading more about this!

I think it's left up to interpretation, whether they really stay together as a couple in the long term. I'm not sure the two episodes in Series 2 provided a great leap forward in their relationship beyond what the end of Series 1 gave us - it was more about both characters getting bolder, self-actualized and breaking free of their old habits. No matter what, I do think it's a happy ending.

QAF never resolves itself between romantic and realist - it's always a mix of both.

I personally think it's okay if they are not a couple. Vince could end up with a much better guy than Stuart and have his happy ending. Is something different going to happen when they get to London? Vince still wants to settle down and Stuart doesn't. So, any boyfriend of Vince's is probably always gonna feel like the third wheel being dragged along the two. Although, the characters could develop in a certain way that both of them get what they want and are happy. I care more about Vince though. Stuart comes off as downright cruel to Vince sometimes.

If you really want a happy ending (which I also love), watch the US version. The characters are essentially the same. As are the first few episodes. But later, the US version ventures in a new direction and the characters develop accordingly. Michael and Brian (US equivalents of Vince and Stuart) are both happy and at ease with each other in their relationship. Michael ends up with a recurring character.

Do you know any other 'queer' shows, just in case I've missed any?
