What is up with the uneven progression of difficulty?

I don't feel like the temples are ranged in order of difficulty at all. The Spirit Temple is the last temple, and it's the easiest one of them all, or at least for me it was. The Water Temple is the most challenging, and it's right in the middle. The Forest Temple comes first, before the Fire Temple, but I think the Forest Temple is more difficult than the Fire Temple. Obviously the order of temples is based on the events of the story, but one has to wonder why the creators made later temples easier than earlier ones, particularly the Spirit Temple. In most of the Mario games, the progression in difficulty is very gradual and effective. I think the difficulty progressed well in the very first Zelda, and in Majora's Mask. In Link to the Past it was also kind of scrambled. Do you guys feel the same way I do about Ocarina of Time, or do you think there was a gradual progression of difficulty?

You can complete the temples in any order as long as you get the items from the temple and come back later. But you have to beat the Water Temple before the Shadow and Spirit temples. I like switching it up sometimes.

Why do you have to beat the Water Temple before the Spirit Temple? You can't just retrieve the longshot in the Water Temple, leave the Water Temple, and then head for the Spirit Temple (after retrieving the lens of truth)? I know you need to beat the Water Temple in order to have Shiek be thrown around by the evil spirit and teach you the Nocturne of Shadow, but I don't recall any barriers that would keep you from going to the Spirit Temple.

The room at the beginning of the Spirit Temple to the right with the rolling boulders. You need the Hover Boots to get one of the silver rupees.

reply

Oh yeah, that's right. I've heard of people who have beaten the Spirit Temple before the Shadow Temple though. They must've just gotten the hover boots in the Shadow Temple and then left to go to the Spirit Temple.

reply

That's what I did, the Shadow Temple is my favorite so I like doing it last.

reply

Yeah, I find the Spirit Temple to be very easy too. I absolutely LOATHE the Water Temple because it is so difficult and frustrating and confusing. I'd say the Forest & Fire Temples are about equal in difficulty, with the Shadow Temple being slightly more difficult. The Spirit temple may just be easier to beat than the Forest & Fire Temples, actually. I'd rank them in this order, from easiest to most difficult:

Spirit
Forest
Fire
Shadow
WATER!!!

Why all the water temple hate? I thought it was the easiest one, once I figured out all the water level points. And it had BY FAR the easiest boss.

I think the Water Temple would have been much better if you could change your boots on the fly instead of going to your inventory every time.

I liked that the game mixed up the difficulty. I don't know really, just not knowing what things were gonna be like next made it more fun for me
