A Graveyard of Gameras

Utterly fascinating sequence in which we see the decayed corpses of prior incarnations of Gamera (described in the English-dubbed DVD as "Beta-versions"). The dimly lit undersea view sets the precedent that Gamera is not immortal, that he can die, and this profound revelation really impresses how the creature is more fallible than ever. He takes a vicious beating in every film, yet we know he'll triumph--the idea that he actually could die has never entered the mind until now. In this film he's wounded more badly than ever. It's graphic and it's heartbreaking. And for a time it looks like he's finally lost...

Actually the idea wasn't that Gamera could die, it was that those were creations that failed to become Gamera and that the real Gamera is all alone. The videogame programmer talks about this midway through the film.

And then Mayumi at the end subverts that, declaring "Gamera is not alone", meaning that mankind is with him.
