question about ending (possible spoilers for those who haven't seen it)

just curious in Gamera 3 did he just only kill Irys and just leave the city to deal with the new generation of gyaos? i haven't seen the movie but i'm getting all 3 in a collectors set and just wanna make sure wikipedia didn't miss inform me with that info about the ending.

That is indeed the ending; it concludes with him marching away wounded to fight incredible odds, though this time with the armies of mankind on his side.
A very powerful and creative ending, IMO.

just wondering is the ending of Gamera 3 a teasing or confirmation of Gamera 4, a lead into Gamera the Brave or just leaving it so the people of Japan get stuck fighting Gyaos alone? also for any one in the states looking to find the entire Gamera Trilogy all at once i found it at www.cduniverse.com for a good price although when i ordered it yesterday online its currently on backorder.

None of the above, really. It's an unconventional and audacious way of epitomising Gamera's character -that he will fight to the end, whatever the odds- in a single powerful scene.

so he kills one threat to japan and takes off leaving japan to deal with a second threat? that is very anti climatic.

The film's climax isn't its ending, but the final battle between Gamera and Irys. The final scene isn't meant to be a climax; it's a symbolic elegy to the spirit of Gamera's character, and a very daring and imaginative conclusion.

well shouldn't the spirit of gamera have killed all the gyaos before leaving japan? isn't that the true spirit of gamera?

reply

^ No, at least not in my opinion, or the opinion of Shusuke Kaneko and Kazunori Ito. The spirit of Gamera isn't about always winning, it's about perservence in the face of impossible odds, and self-sacrifice for the protection of others. The ending of G3 showcases this in a single, dazzling scene.

And what an emotional scene it is. I think it made me tear up a little more than the climax of Godzilla vs Destroyah. This is truly one of the best kaiju films there is: it may not have as much action as you expect, but it's a great deconstruction of the genre.

Here's Kaneko's intentions about the end of "Gamera 3:"

"Gamera 3" apparently reveals that Gamera is god. Maybe not the god, but certainly a god. Shusuke Kaneko has said that when he was making the Gamera trilogy, he looked around Japanese society and saw that the younger Japanese by and large didn't really believe in anything, spiritually or otherwise. He wished to address this in his Gamera pictures. Gamera resurrects from the flames like the mythical phoenix in the first film. In 2, the sign of the cross forms the "me" character in Gamera's name on the title card and Gamera is "dead" for 3 days before resurrecting. To drive this point home, the English card at the end of the third film says "GAMERA 1999: THE ABSOLUTE GUARDIAN OF THE UNIVERSE." Absolute. As in a deity. So in ending the movie this way as a message to the Japanese he was addressing, Kaneko basically says "Yeah, Gamera's gonna win. But we're not gonna show it to you. You have to BELIEVE he's going to win."

Also JL, Gamera doesn't "leave Japan." It's quite obvious that the final showdown between Gamera, man, and Gyaos is going to be the hellish landscape that used to be Kyoto.

I'm interested, where did you read this?

Where do you get that he just leaves Japan? He doesn't. The film ends with him waiting to take on the massive swarm of Gyaos, despite major injury from Iris(including a lost hand).
