compelling , but...... [spoilers, big time]

i've just watched all 3 hours of this in one go. and i didnt spend much time looking at the clock. But i feel a little cheated.

i was concerned for the characters , and the library , all the way through. It was very well acted and filmed, and written but the story just petered out .

I thought Oswald had something up his sleeve, that there was a reason he replied / ignored those letters.

And the way he kept sort of insinuationg he had it under control.

...so in the end the day is saved when our hero's do a bit of geneology and show the american a pic of him with his gran. big deal.

i know his life was rigid, and nice for him to know his ancestors partied , but still...

i refuse to believe they could trace all that purely with pics too, if it was a newspaper archive then maybe. (i know he ordered some)

to sum up , i was *really* underwhelmed with the pic of the kid with his grandma.

the music was good - i kept feeling it was building up to something amazing, but it just kept going , and climaxed with that photo . pfft.

my reaction was huge disappointment after the loooooong buildup too.

photoshopping stuff, as random cliffhanger resolution (for goodness sake), was unsatisfying.

the rest of the earlier script, shucks, thru eps 1 and 2 i was mesmerized.

Agree that the ending - in fact, the whole third episode - was disappointing. Timothy Spall's character was the star of the show, IMO, and it was a mistake to use a plot device which omitted him (almost completely) from the final part. A pity, because I thought the first two episodes were just brilliant.
