British Hospital conditions?

Do British hospitals really allow people to walk in and watch as a relative is being worked on? We're in the states and enjoy this show but found it odd how they rarely wear surgical masks. Of course we realize it is fiction but the surgery is spot on but conditions look not so sterile.

No, they should really have no access to the theatre just the viewing station (which itself is really for consulting staff to observe and communicate) When Johnny ran in to theatre to watch his prison buddy being worked on, he was without a mask and should have been reprimanded, or really should have known better.

01. Infection Control Practitioners would have a field day with this show spotting all the dings in procedures.

02. They do practice hand-washing, but not always the correct procedure in certain instances. Masks are not always used by principal actors, but it's understood that it's for vocal clarity.

03. The 'Open Concept' is most likely for better viewing whole sets, rather than the private patient rooms, or shared room for two-to-three.

04. Unsupervised children allowed to visit sick admissions is really pushing it. All kinds of infectious diseases, hard to contain bloody, bodily fluids, exposed to hazardous wastes, patients convulsing, dying and other horrible things like limb loss and facial destruction should not be watched by children. Holby City is not a place for children to get in the way, by placing the patients and themselves at risk.

04. It's a show, so we cut them some slack.
