'D' on the door

I get the feeling that I was supposed to get some sort of in-joke about the "D" on the donut shop door. ("It stands for 'donuts', the cashier said). They showed it several times, and talked about it - what does it mean?

It appeared to me to be a health grade for the place. Most states have them now for all restaurants. However, I didn't get a clear look of the sign on the door.

check it out - next time you go in a restaurant, there will (likely) be an "A" near the door somewhere. That means they passed their health/restaurant inspection.

D means Deficient, and they're on probation.
