I wondered about that as well. I have seen many ringing public telephones but I've never answered one of them. Why would anyone answer a public phone?

He had just been talking on it and thought that he was being called back. This is obvious by how casually he answers, as if he knows who is on the other end.

Ye but I don't agree with the point. I would never answer a phone that wasn't my own phone and I don't always answer my phone either when it rings. But I know that there are some people that feel like they have to answer a phone that's ringing but I don't understand them at all.

"I would never answer a phone that wasn't my own phone" - Why wouldn't you? What's the worst thing that could happen (realistically speaking, I mean, not in a film like this)? I find it quite a natural reaction to pick up a public phone that's ringing when you stand next to it. It doesn't cost me anything and doesn't do me any harm.

exactly. I'd never normally answer a ringing payphone but if it rang just as I'd hung up I'd probably answer in case it was a callback from whoever I was just talking to
it's quite likely he was thinking "ooh maybe Pam changed her mind!"

Because The Caller is obviously clued up as to what to say to him. He's very manipulating in this.
shareI might answer it. What if someone was trying to get in touch with a doctor or something important? You could tell them they dialed wrong.
Years ago, one of the women in my office got the number of a pay phone across the street, and we started calling the #. We could see who answered and she would make up some story. Men were more likely to answer and she'd immediately start a story like "Oh, Jim, I'm so sorry about last night! or "Bob, you were WONDERFUL last nigh when we got home" and would just keep talking. Or she'd start an argument with her "boyfriend". Stuff like that. It was pretty funny. So I don't know why someone would pick up the phone, but a lot of people did. Just out of curiosity, I guess.
