Different from portrayal in "Gandhi"

Just saw both movies back to back, "Gandhi"(1982) being first, and I was curious about Muhammad Ali Jinnah because of how he was put on display in that film. They showed him to seem envious of Gandhi and quite a bit "nasty," for lack of a better word, possibly even a bit deceptive or dishonest.

So I read an article on the movie 'Gandhi' in which I read this: "If the movie contains a particularly poisonous portrait of Mohammed Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, the Indian reply, I suppose, would be that if the Pakistanis want an attractive portrayal of Jinnah let them pay for their own movie."

This is said because, according to the article, the government of India payed a third of the budget for that movie to be made and was an integral part of the writing process, constantly checking and re-checking the plot.

So then I had to watch this movie, "Jinnah"(1998), and see this depiction. The only similarities in the character portrayals in the two movie are that he was pretty stern, spoke with confidence, and can potentially be seen as lacking in humor (as was joked about in "Jinnah").

I understand everyone has their own account, or point of view, and these two specifically were friendly rivals but his portrayal in "Gandhi" was so much that I had to research more about the man to see if possibly he betrayed the people at some point OR if he was being disingenuous during these conflicts (apologies, not familiar with Indian/Pakistani history). But to no avail, It seems to me like he was very exacting and vigilant to his agenda and his people, just like some others of the time were.

On another note, Nehru seemed similar in both films.
