An alternative ending would be making Portia immortal by transferring her mind into an artificial body (of the type which Andrew had) looking exactly as she looked in her own young body. Then they would live happilly together for ever. :)
I'd hate to live forever, 'cuz then I'd be stuck here forever, I'd have to re-live the pain of EVERYTHING...everyday would pass in and out, meaningless, because there would be no more time, I'd probably go mad...
...and I'd personally love to see what lies on the other side! I don't fear death, personally I can't wait! Not that I'm suicidal, I just love the idea of knowing the answer to the ultimate question humans ask! :D
There is human nurse in the room when Galatea is ordered to shut off Porcia's life support. Galatea does as ordered, and the nurse says, "You just harmed a human being!"
Galatea replies, "She ordered me to do it. I complied. It was what she wanted."
"But you harmed a human being! You killed a human! That's a blatant violation of the First Law!"
Galatea: "She was about to die, anyway. She had outlived her usefulness. She had become obsolete. I decided that her life was already over. Therefore, she was less than human, and the First Law did not apply."
Nurse: "But if you can decide whether someone is human or something less, then you can apply the First Law selectively, or not at all. And if Porcia Martin was less than human, then why did you even follow her order?"
Galatea: "Because she ordered me to do what I was going to do anyway."
At this point Galatea grabs the other nurse, and throws her into the wall of the room at such a speed and with such a strength that only a robot could muster, thus killing her. The camera zooms in on Gatatea's face, and freeze frames. A bunch of computer text appears on the screen, implying her thoughts. One line states "HUMANITY = OBSOLETE". The credits roll up the screen, as the theme to The Terminator is heard in the background.
I very very rarely if ever post in the topics on these boards, heck this could be my first ever response! But I have been an active lurker for years and upon stumbling on this post just now I absolutely had to respond to you and say thank you good sir for making me spit my soda out in howls of laughter! It was the image of zooming in and freeze framing her face and the Terminator theme playing that killed me! I just only got done watching this movie today and felt down about it, but you sure changed that! I doubt you'll ever see this message as 8 years have passed since you wrote this but I'm inclined either way to reach out.
Thanks again!
"Just another freak in the freak kingdom"
Actually you sort of missed the point. Andrew chooses to become mortal because he doesn't want to live without Portia. If she chose to live forever with him I doubt he'd have made the decision he did. After making that decision of wanting to die he wanted this recognised as being human.
After the President gives her speech, declaring Andrew to be the first bicentennial man, the opposing party presents their rebuttal, as is tradition.
A recording Andrew plays, and he says, "I ordered my lawyer to play this video if I was granted humanity after my death. I tried to get humanity for two hundred years, and you just ignored me. Now that I am dead you finally give it to me. Well, thank you so much! Lots of good it does me now, breeder!".
Andrew shows his middle finger.
