Why did Sir get upset by Andrews request?

When Andrew confronts Sir asking for his freedom, why does Sir get upset? Wouldn't this be a happy occasion, seeing as Sir wanted to help Andrew become as much as he could be?

I really can't see any other answer than that the filmmakers wanted to inject some drama. Anyhow it really felt way off character for me.

I believe it was because he did not really want Andrew to leave, he was scared that he wanted to go.

Because he became emotionally attached to Andrew. Having him leave is like having your now-grown child move out of the house. You're not needed anymore.
