I discovered Ruroui Kenshin from the TV series, I heard good things about it and maybe I'll watch it, but then I hear about these random OVAs that are a lot more graphic in content and may or may not be connected to the TV series. Can anyone explain to me how the whole thing fits together?

The anime series was directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi.
While not as violent and bloody as the OVA, this TV series features light-hearted comedy and action instead. The characters are funny and the animation style is cartoonish and doesn't take itself too seriously. The version aired on some TV channels but the DVDs are uncut and uncensored. If you can, BUY THIS SERIES! :) This has a lot of action and comedy and drama. You will be very happy you did!
