I just ordered the series earlier in the week it should arrive at my house monday/tuesday, so is the dub really that bad.
I'm all for subtitles, I watch an abundant amount of foreign films so I'm fine with subtitles, but I'm just a sucker for a good English dub.

Well, you'll find out soon enough by yourself but this should give you an idea of -how- bad it is...Tae has an accent that I'm having trouble figguring out...I can't decide if it is a southern drawl or just plain redneck.

The dub is pretty impractical. It doesn't drive me nuts, but its not good.
I'm sticking with the subs.

I started to listen to the rant, then stopped when the guy said that he wipes his butt with pages from the Bible. Sorry, but I don't find disrespecting other people's beliefs to be funny.
First, you must discover whose face lies behind this mask, but you must never know my face.
Usually I prefer the Japanese version, but one thing in the Japanese version of RK was a turnoff for me: Kenshin being voiced by a chick! What the hell is up with that? You don't have a female voice the strongest swordsman in Japan!
In the case of the dub, I thought Richard Hayworth did a great job as Kenshin, except he left out the "Oro". I also loved Lex Lang as Sano. He was so perfect for the voice of the rooster-headed, bird-brained freeloader.
I wasn't wild about Kaoru and Yahiko's English VAs and don't even get me started on Tae and Chou, who both sound like they're from Texas instead of Japan. I understand that they're trying to pass off an Osaka dialect, but honestly, just change their speech patterns!
The most annoying English voice though has to be Misao. She gives me a headache.

Actually, I think the English dub for the series is really good (though I wish they used more of the Japanese terms). And it's also better than English dub for the RK movie and OVA's.
As for Kenshin been voice by a female VA in Japan.... well, what wrong with it? There's a lot that in Anime. It just depends on the VA. Other famous anime characters voice by women in Japan includes Ed Elric (FMA), Kurama (Yû yû hakusho), Goku of the DB/DBZ animes, and Luffy (One Piece - a woman does his voice in both the Japanese original AND the US English dub!!!).

and thats why I hate watching DBZ and FMA (lol, they both have 3 letter abbreviations.....I know, I'm stupid) in Japanese. I don't mind subbed versions of anime at all, but when I heard Goku yelling at someone when I borrowed my friends copy of the first Broli movie on VHS, I wanted to shoot the TV!!! It pisses me off to no end, but thats just me.

The dub is pretty good, but translation-wise, I suggest you stick with the subs because it's not accurate. They're trying to correspond the english dialog with the the timing and precision of how the characters speak. But still, you will be able to empathize with them and their emotions nonetheless while watching it with subtitles, I guarantee you. It's much better, although I admit I like the voice of Richard Hayworth as Kenshin. Thanks.

the english dub arn't that bad in this anime...well i mean japanese will always be better be if i have to chose this dub or other anime dub ill prefer this one,not that bad
shareIt is not the worst dub in the anime history but it is as most of them horrible, I especially hate that american accent they have when pronouncing names, just terrible...and many other things they say such as "what?" in battles just sound silly.
shareI actually prefer the dub, but that's just because I saw the first 25 episodes in English, so it was kinda hard to get used to the Japanese. Although I usually prefer subtitles (Cowboy Bebop is an exception).
shareThe dub is pretty good for a dub done in the 90's. Overall I'd rather watch the dub because I can't stand the fact they had Kenshin voiced by a girl in Japan. He sounds like he's the same age as Yahiko. Normally I wouldn't have had a problem with that if he wasn't an adult like Ed Elric, Kurama, and Luffy.

I actually like it-I usually prefer sub's, but I grew up watching it in Engish(same with DBZ) ^^ Though I agree about the way they pronounce people's names,though, it's typical.The names arent that hard to pronounce *sigh*
But,I'd watch either one(I like Kenshin's voice in English.I think it's cute)

I have a system with any and all animes I watch. The first time through I will always watch the dub, you get the greater picture that way and can devote more attention to foreground/background contrasts and character developments etc, when you aren't reading what is being said. With that said, on later watch throughs (unless i'm feeling lazy) i watch with the subs because you get a more accurate translation that way. Watching an anime with both will help you gain a larger and fuller appreciation for the show as a whole. You can't catch sarcasm or wit or dramatic pauses as well when you are reading it as opposed to listening, yet you will miss out on certain nuances, such as the much loved "oro". Your choice really, but that's my method.

O.O I love it when Kenshin says "that I do", it's so adorable, how can you hate it? =( My boyfriend and I just watched the first couple of episodes with Cho from the Juppangatana (or however the FVCK you spell that o.o lol) where he kidnaps the baby of the swordmaker...I swear my head was about to explode when that kid kept referring to Kenshin as "That I Do!", it was the cutest thing I've ever seen ^_^ I just love it when Kenshin says stuff like that, it adds to his cute factor. It just makes me want to pinch his cheeks and pull his ponytail for some reason...I also find myself copying it a lot, that I do ^_^
And I loudly echo the sentiment of whomever above said Misao is the WORST. DUB. VOICE. EVER. Coming from me...that's saying a LOT. If you've ever seen me on the Naruto boards, you know that the only character/VA that I hate more than any in the entire dub is the English Orochimaru. And yet, I've never quite wanted to see a character die more violently than I do Misao...

shareif you prefer watching a cartoon then watch the dub, but if you want to see an anime which is Japanese then watch the subbed version. For me the dubbing was pretty weak. and all that pissing of, of having a woman doing a mans voice is unreasonable. In the cartoon kenshin was portrait much younger and frail physically, than his age. and a stronger voice does not make you stronger.if you watched the anime series, than you will understand wat i m sayin.
