Casting

I just saw this and was wondering what on earth the casting director was thinking in casting Alessandro Nivola (as much range as a board) and Matthew Lillard ('This is panto, right?'). I'm willing to ignore Alicia Silverstone's singing, but honestly, those two men stood out as being not on an acting par with anyone else in the film. Adrian Lester was brilliant, though, and I enjoyed everyone else.

I agree especially about Matthew Lillard. He's not that good at acting nor singing... Lester was amazing though :)

Hehehe :P
I like Branagh andI think taht he's a good singer.
i have lately played it to my sister, I didn't comment on Lillard's voice (so she really didn't have any attitude towards him), but the the moment he started to sing, she started to laugh histerically.
As much as I always admire Branagh for good casting, this time he amde a mistake ;)

Wow, it's been a while since this thread was active! I agree about Matthew Lillard. Branagh's funny - he has a tendency to put young slightly inappropriate American actors in his Shakespearea films, prob to get bums on seats. (I'm not saying americans can't do Shakespeare, just that he's picked a couple of duff ones over the years). Case and point: Keanu Reeves.

I thought Nivola was good at dancing. Lillard added quirkiness. Lester was superb - loved his dancing and singing voice. Branagh impressed me too with his dancing better than his singing.
