no, not exactly actually ask anyone with high probability you will get the answer they watch the movie...and I think itsnot shameful for us because movie was done with small budget and tech. availabilities..so we shouldn't criticise much..we should consider and resperct the courage and open minded that created this film among the people who have no idea about fiction at that time..No one should shame of their truth.than americans have a lot of thing to shame or movies like in each an american saves the world or universe...pıhh come on!!

reply

This is a great list of great films...

However, I would like to say that GORA was an expensive piece of rubbish.
It was not funny... Full of unnecessary curses... very weak finale....

You think it is a good one, just because it has enjoyed a tremendous publicity in Turkey before the release, because of financial reasons...

Popularity does not mean quality...

Thus, please be honest to yourselves. It is a mediocre-movie and a waste of CGI-Technology.

BUT ... Please do not get angry immediately.

Every time, when I criticise this film, Cem Yilmaz fans get upset, as if he were a god.

Hello there,
speaking of good Turkish films, there are actually quite a few to list most of which are unfortunately not available on DVD or any other media format.

My favorite Turkish movie (and I think the best Turkish movie of all time) is Zugurt Aga (Broke Landowner) which is a story about a landowner in Eastern/rural Turkey who loses everything and moves to istanbul. He is very honest and cannot cope with the dishonest, cutthroat people of the city.

Also, there are a lot of great Turkish comedy films made in the 70s starring great Turkish actors such as Sener Sen, Kemal Sunal, Adile Nasit, Aysen Gruda, Munir Ozkul, Tarik Akan and Halit Akcatepe. This team made incredible movies. Even today when I watch them, I laugh so hard. Below are some of the ones I can remember:

Hababam Sinifi
Gulen Gozler (Smiling Eyes)
Neseli Gunler (Happy Days)
Mavi Boncuk (Blue Bead - With Emel Sayin)
Cicek Abbas (with Ilyas Salman)
Banker Bilo (with Ilyas Salman)
Copculer Krali (King of Trashmen)

The social message in those movies has always amazed me. The story line and characters were written in a way that successfully show the importance of honesty, love and loyalty over money and profit.

I'd like to make a few comments myself. Let me state in advance that I too am a Turk.

The list given is an amazing list of films. I especially recommend Karpuz Kabuğundan Gemiler Yapmak. There are a few points I must make here:

- The same mistakes and technical disabilities existed in all the movies of the time. Only with this film we have "stupider" mistakes on the small thin line between "sarcasm" and "idiocy" , we'll get back to this.

- Arkın is NOT the best of the time. If you want to sample the Turkish Cinema art of the time, I recommend you try Kemal Sunal.

- Arkın is NOT a disgrace. Why should he be? Why should I ever feel ashamed? I have somewhat more of a developed sense of individuality and I'd also like to add that Arkın's movies helped the nation's feelings of indivisibility a lot.

About sarcasm and idiocy, I can say that this movie is one of the worst, based on the fact that Arkin still states that he strived for a work of SciFi and not comedy. Fot this, and this only, I can say that this is the worst movie in the whole universe.

But hey! I still recommend you try Kemal Sunal. Ah yes and Zeki Alasya & Metin Akpınar for tasteful comedy. Just an independent view but I can list some countries I think make excellent movies:

USA, Italy, France, UK and finally Japan. I don't like all the Hollywood popcorn stuff but sometimes Hollywood just hits it.. (Forrest Gump, Tim Burton's movies etc.)

I must say that I find the Turkish cinema industry evolving into something, if the countries listed above are taking as models. Dünyayı Kurtaran Adam is a laugh for all the Turks as well as the world, and I don't think no one expecting something artistic should ever watch it. But still, that does not disprove the fact that it is great comedy :D

reply

If Dunyayi Kurtaran Adam is a bad film,House of the Dead is worse. And Dunyayi Kurtaran Adam is made in 1982, but House of the Dead is made in 2003 and by 3 countries (Canada,USA,Germany). What can you say that??? Turkish Films are BETTER than american films. But Korean and japanese films are the best.

reply

What im guessing some on this forum fail to understand is that there are people out there who like OBSCURE cinema, regardless of it's country of origin.

quite frankly, i want to see more turkish films, both mainstream and exploitative, since i have watched coneyt arkin's films. i just love movies. Both bad and good

reply

Oh please, no country is the best at film making. Japanese films bore me anyway. I much prefer Chinese cinema. The Boxers Omen was amazing.

The only good cop is a Robocop.

reply

What now? U guyz listing turkish films and showing off? Why should anyone be ashamed for a film that someone did without asking the nation? Are turkish films the only things we can be proud of? Get a life and stop being a lawyer for other people's jobs. A nation is one but one is not a nation. Chill....

reply

its not the nationality its the unique mix of lack on the continuity , screenplay , fitting(montage) , acting , virtual effects (its because of lack of money i think)
(i saw scenes from starwars actually at background).....goes on like this.
this film had been made in 2 weeks or something.I read an article about this film the screenplay was written in 1 day by cüneyt arkin's himself (lead actor in the film)

So its not a starwars triology actually

look at the dialogs man just look at it

- i'm gravitating by a secret power to a planet i can t understand why (x wings fightin at the back)

-hey ali threw a whisle may let the girls show themselfs

-"whisle"

homemade monsters come out which the costumes made by orenbayans herself

this film was on screen after starwars hit big time

so it can be a parody (a spool) of starwars but if i know cuneyt arkin its not a
parody

I'm a big fan of starwars but the film (i didnt read the book) has so much things i dont get.its the lightsaber duellos made this film worth to watch (and han solo of course)

what was i sayin...hah.

you can not criticize as you watchin serenity or starwars (these are good films) its like plump fiction but this film is actually granted to be the worst film ever made thats the thing.if you want to watch a startrek (its both space dont hit me) parody watch
"Turist Omer Uzay Yolunda"

i can say its better than death tunnel

I could'n say turkish films are better then what happned to casablanca , to indiana jones triology (sorry i m a huge harrison ford fan),to 2001 space oddysey (i didn quite get the idea i confess),to pink panter strikes again

This movie is a blast...
Equal parts Al Adamson and Ed Wood jr..
Chock full of action and more action.
Make sure to check out the Turkish version of Star Trek, Spiderman, and Tarzan, as well.
And no, I don't see these as a true representation of Turkish cinema any more than I would consider the Backstreet Boys a representation of American music...
nor is Ule Bowles a representative of German (or any other) cinema.
Most can tell the difference between quickie cash-ins and real cinema....
So relax, and enjoy....
It's still better than tripe like Who's My Caddy or Glitter.

Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.

I have seen many good Turkish movies. However this one is an exceptional piece of crap. The director and writer talent are evident. What a silly mixture of many other plots. I don't say plagiarism, since this seems to be unknown concept for the filmmakers. Using a shots and music from the original Star wars and other movies made me thinking that I haven't seen yet the entire breathy of the cinema. I am not familiar who are the people made this movie, and I don't care about it. What I am concern about is the audience watched this movie...I cannot imagine that it really somebody watched it. I cannot comprehend even the rank of 5.2 due to females under 18 (???) ... may be I am not turk to understand it....

hey derek

what is wrong with you man?
i understand the fact that maybe you have some problem with the turks or with the country but how could you use the word" worst " to describe turkish cinema? i mean how many turkish films you have watched ? did you watch any films from Nuri Bilge Ceylan or Zeki Demirkubuz or Yavuz Turgul?, there are many other filmmakers who made pure cinema over the years (not rip -off's like this one)

so please respect them and also respect their work

Fatih Akin is Turkish-German. If you watch his films, you'll see that he is a director of both nationalities as he continuously tries to show the conflicts between the two cultures in his movies (e.g. Head-on)

I strongly suggest you watch "Three Monkeys" by Nuri Bilge Ceyhan. Excellent movie! He was also awarded Cannes Best Director '08 for this movie.

Of course not every Turkish movie made is as good as Three Monkeys, nor is every Turkish movie made is as bad as The Man Who Saves the World.

-----------------------------------

One more thing..

"ya well turkish films are probably crap anyway...it's turkey...what the hell does turkey have other then Istanbul (better known as Constantinople)...turkey is a piece of *beep*" - deadheardy

If you don't know what Turkey has other than Istanbul, I think this is your illiteracy. Don't you blame your ignorance on Turkey :)

I believe Turkish Star Wars flopped when it was first released in Turkey, am I right? Because I think it was made when Turkish exploitation movies started to wane in popularity.

In fact it's considered as one of Cuneyt Arkın's (the star of the movie) weakest films.
