Aced his exams, handed in superior papers, and scored high on SAT's. He was in classes’ years ahead of his age through most of school.

She put him into school a year early. His performance in school enabled him to skip a grade. Yes, his mother gamed the system but it wouldn;t have worked if he didn;t live up to his potential.

What does his mother have to do with how he graduated, or is this just another opportunity for you to push a misogynistic agenda?

I believe the dialogue goes something like:

Anita: Mom, pull over. Tell him the truth. Tell him how old he is.

Mom: He knows how old he is.

(Something about being called a narc)

William: It's no big deal. I'm 12. She skipped me a grade I'm a year younger. They're 13, I'm 12.... Aren't I?

Mom: I also put you in first grade when you were five and never told you.

William: So... I'm... how old?

Mom: Eleven. So you skipped the fifth grade. There's too much padding in grades anyway.

So i think he just went into school early and skipped the fifth grade.
I think the mom or Anita says something about "skipping an extra grade" in this conversation, but I think it's the fifth grade to which they're referring (or kindergarten?)

The math is spelled out by William who thinks he's 12 while the other students are 13. Then the hammer falls that he entered his school career a year early. So i suppose if one thinks of K-12, William did skip two years: Kindergarten and the 5th.

That's alright. He'll "meet them all again on their long journey to the middle"

Also, this took place before the passage of Prop 13, which gutted school budgets and all but eliminated summer school for accelerated learners. (Currently, most districts provide as summer school as credit recovery.)

My brother graduated the same year and he had a classmate who was 15. He graduated from Cal in three years with a double major.

I think the question I have is how did he graduate with all of the school he missed touring with the band?
