Did Penny fall in love with William?

The scene in the airport where William runs along with the plane waving. There is a moment where Penny has this look of realization on her face that I interpreted to mean...."omg I really dig this guy". Any thoughts?

I agree

I wouldn;t call it "fall in love". But I do think she had a moment of clarity that she just discarded the most terrific guy she'd ever met.

I had assumed she had a moment of clarity and him telling her his feelings the night before came back to her; it overwhelmed her and she reached out, not necessarily in love but definitely having a human moment of being truly loved by someone instead of just used and discarded.

Yes, the stewardess spiel jogged her memory and she recalled reciting it when William was trying to keep her awake. Then she remembered him telling her he loves her.

I think she finally realizes that he is really the only person that truly cares about her. Everyone else only cares about the Penny Lane persona.

reply

I agree with this. Compared to all the other people she likely hung around, he was probably the only sincere and purely genuine person she ever met. I don't think she fell in love with him, but that they just kinda shared a moment/realization of deep friendship...

reply

Yes, I agree with this too.

I never took Penny's reaction at the airport as a sign that she had fallen in love with William. Penny found a real friend in William. He was someone she had confided in, in a way she had never done before. She trusted him and knew that he respected her and cared about her in a way most of the other people in her life didn't.

Interesting. I always thought she realized that Willian was more of a friend she could fully trust. Despite William falling in love with her (who wouldn't?), Penny never really saw him as a boyfriend, I believe.

reply

I never interpreted it as such. I always thought it was her moment of clarity that she lost the only person and friend who saw and liked the real her.
The others only saw the Penny Lane persona.

Sadly for William, Penny is Indifferent to William as a love interest, although she does eventually begin to value his integrity
