how did Penny make money

I'm assuming that a groupie who traveled with the band was being taken to restaurants or bars by the band or the entourege if they weren't ordering from room service, and weren't paying for their own food and drinks. And that they got occasional presents of money or other things appropriate to the lifestyle.

I also assume that anyone who was a full-time groupie knew how to drop a hint about these things. Still, it must have been rough for a girl who was between bands out there on the road.
