Goofy line by Douglas.... poor attempt to be profound

When Douglas's character is about to give his role in the war against drugs he makes this comment, "If there is a war on drugs, then many of our family members are the enemy. And I don't know how you wage war on your own family."

It's dumb for a handful of reasons. For an easy one: No, your family doesn't have to be viewed as the enemy. Now, they could be viewed as being pawns of the enemy or even victims of the enemy. But it's not necessary that they be viewed as the enemy per se.

But more importantly.... it's a meaningless or stupid comment for the simple fact that then all crimes perpetrated by your family would be excusable because.... they're your family.

Take out "Drugs" from his quote and put in "murder". Are you not going to attempt to bring murderers to justice because they're your family? And, in attempting to bring them to justice you'd be having to go to war with your family? Stupid line in that movie. For me, it makes the film collapse. Because it then becomes clear to me the angle that they're trying to push.

But maybe the whole point of that scene and speech was to show how conflicted Michael Douglas' character was and that he didn't really know what to say and say it coherently let alone in a way that is politically correct?

And that "enemy" part could also, perhaps, be a commentary on how, however incorrectly, society views and looks down or potentially looks down on drug users and drug addicts, even if it is indeed wrong and destructive to do so.

yea, he was in a real Struggle at that point & didn't he just walkout on the Speech anyway. That was a turning point for Judge Wakefield.

Pretty much sums up this whole turd that failed to be relevant.
