Woefully dated

The 9/11 attacks deleted the 'war on drugs' from American awareness.

They would also talk about the War on Terror now and the Mexican Drug War.

What's crazy is how accurate this movie was when it came out. It was like watching a live update on what was happening in Mexico, all they did was change the names. I spent some time in Matamoros just shortly after one of the major gun battles between police and one of the two brothers. They pretty much ruled the drug trade at the time and one of them was killed in the streets literally across from our hotel. I had gone across the border for three years and they were so friendly to the tourists but now all of that is gone and it's become a horrific battlefield over there. And the main Cartel, Los Zetas, started out as military trained by us that branched off from another cartel. Very accurate, prophetic movie.

Sicario is the updated version of Traffic.
If you see the movie, Benito Del Toro gives another great performance. I don't know why Salma Hayek was in the movie. She had about 1 minute of screen time....same for Benjamin Bratt.

reply

Not for black folks it didn't. 90% of arrests are for drug possession.

Amen. Just watched it for probably the 8th time and the overall message, that we are fighting a losing "war" still rings true IMHO. I get that 9/11 changed the global dynamic towards terrorism and drug funded terrorists but the central message remains the same. Prohibition was a massive failure and the war on drugs has been a massive failure for friggin 40 odd years. All the drug czars and speeches won't change basic human nature. Worse thing to think of is in another 15 years or so we will still be hearing the next "say no to drugs" type slogans and empty speeches we are today, and in 1999/2000...and I'm pretty sure we will. So IMHO the movie still works.

Agreed...I remember seeing the movie in 2000. On another note, Catherine Zeta-Jones was HOT! (I wish she'd still act in films but she has musicals, and family life..:))

No.
