Spielberg settled for a fun movie instead of a great one

Which is a shame since aside from John William's bombastic score (Spielberg should have gone with another composer on this one) and Spielberg's maudlin touches (that ending only makes sense if it's all in Anderton's mind, which, unfortunately I don't think timid Spielberg would have the guts to do) I think Philip K Dick would have liked this adaptation.

Fun sells ;)

It's thoroughly fun, however I find it more engrossing than fun. In other words, yes I think it's great :)

Admittedly, the ending being all in Anderson's mind could have left more of an impact. That said, I feel this type of ending would've nevertheless felt played out (for the post-Fight Club days it seemed many movies were going that route). Granted maybe that wouldn't be the case for a Spielberg film, but personally I feel this movie still succeeds with a happier ending.

The one thing I really agree with you - is Williams' score. He and Spielberg have created some of cinema's most unforgettable moments, but this time the music didn't suit the images on screen very well. That's my only big issue with the movie.

I didn't think it was fun or great. I thought it was forgettable but pretty, with some highly awkward moments

Awkward? I've seen that movie repeatedly and I can't think of anything awkward...what do you mean?

The one scene that always grated me is the one where Anderton goes to the prison for the first time, and that caretaker guy? Couldn't stand that scene...that was so overacted that it took me out of the movie...kept wondering how it made it through to the final cut. Its like the guy didn't have enough lines so decided to chew the sh*t out of the few he did...was a ridiculously goofy performance from an otherwise decent small-part actor.

That's my entire problem with this movie. It's f'n brilliant, but keeps getting derailed by this blatant Spielberg Adventure Park stuff. It's very unfortunate he got this movie. It could have been a properly gritty masterpiece along side the greats of all time. Instead it's.... pretty good.
