Best sci-fi flick I've seen...

It is probably because I just love Steven Spielberg and it is because my dead dad said he's the best director ever. My dad got me into movies, I watch more of them than an average mortal. I was still a child when dad told me what is the role of a director, screenwriter and director of photography in the movies even though he was just a simple carpenter. And I remember once, when I asked him 'Dad, who is the best director?'. And without a moment of hesitation, he replied 'Steven Spielberg'. And I was a child, so I asked 'Why?'. And he said 'Remember that scene from Empire of the Sun, whe that boy gets to the stadium and there are furnitures and stuff in the middle of it? That could be done only by Spielberg and any other director could not achieve it by any means'.

And it left mark in my mind that Steven Spielberg is the best director of our times and even though I never had the chance to ask now, why my dad thought that no other director could get right basically a prop scene, I never saw another Spielberg movie as "just another movie". And when I saw Minority Report for the first time I was about 14 and my dad was still alive, and I was watching it with him, while he was pointing at the screen with amazement, sometimes saying "Did you see that?'. And I was a child, that was watching movies just for entertainment, and now I'm a grown up guy who is watching movies, because he loves watching movies thanks to his dad.

So, now I find myself unable to rate Spielberg's movies in objective way and I think of Minority Report as one of the best sci-fi flicks of all time. And I probably have seen it around ten times by now and it never stops to amaze me. I want to call it definitive sci-fi movie after one viewing, but Internet is cruel for such statements.

Because I was born in late 80', so watching Blade Runner, Alien, Terminator and other flicks that were defining the sci-fi was just catching-up with the world of movies, but with Minority Report I witnessed something, that in my mind is just great. Because when I got to see so much movies, I got so lazy at picking the movies that I really love and somehow Minority Report is one of them. Even though it throws a lot of gimmicks at the viewer it is a masterpiece of sci-fi genre as it combines the elements of classic movie making with CGI. And it happens to be entertaining and complex at the same time. Today, that CGi may be outdated and look plastic sometimes, but moments where Spielberg is using classic methods are goddamn amazing.

Because it is amazing for a sci-fi film to me to be remembered by its non-CGI scenes instead of those action-packed. Forr example the one with Peter Stormrare and the one with robotic spiders. And I am always amazed by Spielberg's choice of actors that sometimes can carry only a B-movies secondary role, but somehow they can carry a scene at his set (like Neal McDonough in MR).

There is Avengers movie that made it into top #250, that is nothing more than action and masturbating to Marvel Universe and then, there is this gem, that on entertainment and emotional level achieved much more, is not on this list. Don't get me wrong - I had fun watching Avengers but it is far from what Minority Report achieved in my mind.

Agreed. Minority report is outstanding and Spielberg is a master. Underrated at 7.7. Deserves to be in the top 250 easily.

Thanks for sharing. My dad died in 88 when I was 8 and there a few films which are a treasure to this day like bridge too far.
