Found the novel the movie was based on

In response to my post under the "chasing secrets" subject, I did some reasearch to find if this movie was based on a book and it was. The book is called Childhood Thiefs by Rose Mary Evans.

This movie chronicles the experiences of a young Southern girl as she suffers through physical and psychological abuse inflicted by her grandfather. After befriending an elderly African-American couple who live near her, she begins to understand what love truly means while her mother tries to deal with her family's problems. However, some reviews for this book has been nuetral at best by critics, not by the public. This book was based on Rose Mary Evans client, which she called JoAnn who came for pyschiatric help because she was severly depressed. The book focuses on the repressed memories of JoAnn, and her life growing up through psychological, sexual and physical abuse.
