Good setlist

I am a huge fan of Metallica, before the release of their Load album. Since Load, (save for S&M) I think that they have pretty much sucked. This film was produced just after the Load album was released and I think it was great that they kept the setlist fairly thin of Load songs. A really good mixture of their cumulative career is what makes this DVD attractive.

This film has some great versions of their early songs. Some examples of this would be: Creeping Death, Master of Puppets, Kill/Ride medley, For Whom the Bell Tolls.

Is it just me or does Lars sound off-time/bad in a few of the songs? Especially in One and Fade to Black. Also the Bass/Guitar Doodle sounds pretty sloppy and doesn't really impress me. In fact I think it sounds overindulgent. Jason and Kirk are more talented than what they portray here and I think they could have done better.

Overall, I think this film is pretty cool. I watch it a couple of times a month to get the Metallica juices flowing and it works like a charm every time.

Take a minute and respond to this post please.

"This film was produced just after the Load album was released and I think it was great that they kept the setlist fairly thin of Load songs."
- True, although Load is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Load is still heavier than anything by most of these so-called "hard rock bands" today such as Nickelback, Puddle of Mudd, 3 Doors Down, etc... Still, it was good to see more classic Metallica, and I love the broken-down, garage atmosphere stage setting for the Am I Evil? cover. Awesome.

"Is it just me or does Lars sound off-time/bad in a few of the songs? Especially in One and Fade to Black."
- It isn't just you. Lars is a good metal drummer, but he is nowhere near being the best. Tourniquet's Ted Kirkpatrick could play circles around him. But he is a better drummer than all these hardcore band who think you are supposed to double bass through the entire song. Retards. Double bass is for accenting, sort of like slapping a bass. You don't do it for an entire song! But yes, Lars does get off a little, but maybe it was a sound problem with the monitors.

"Also the Bass/Guitar Doodle sounds pretty sloppy and doesn't really impress me. In fact I think it sounds overindulgent. Jason and Kirk are more talented than what they portray here and I think they could have done better."
- Once Kirk comes in they just basically go into My Friend of Misery without having to sing it. Which I thought was cool, since the song is not really that strong on the lyrics content. (Probably the weakest lyric content on the entire black album.) But the music in it was great, so doing the solo from the middle of it was good in my opinion.

- Amen to that, brother.

I'm actually not a huge fan of this setlist. I don't as much mind the Load tunes as they picked a few of the good ones (Until it Sleeps, Ain't My Bitch). There are a couple that I wonder why they're on here (why did they have to play So What and Last Carress and Am I Evil? Just play originals!). However, they're missing a TON!

For one thing, there is absolutely no reason why Battery should not be on here. Blackened as well. Whiplash is even missing from the medley! Of Wolf and Man's another one, maybe even Harvester of Sorrow. What ticks me off the most is that medley. There's no reason you can't play Seek and Destroy or Fight Fire with Fire or The Four Horsemen in their entireity. Just take off Wherever I May Roam, or the covers, or Sad but True. I know they can't play everyone's favorites, but this list seems particularly off balance.

I agree, but if you watch Classics: the black Album or something like that, Jason says that he was hoping that it would be the instrumental.
The Medley is one of my favorites, but I hoped that they would preform Fight Fire with Fire in its whole, also its a pity that Battery is not there...

I think that Load and Reload doenst s*ck that bad, and yes I have heard the first 4 albums. (wich are still better....)

i agree. load and reload are not bad. im sick of people saying those albums suck. my friend of misery is such a mediocre song. i think lars and james decided to use it just to pacify jason. jason should not have quit the band. what a douche bag! yeah, he made the right decision. ha ha. have you seen that some kind of monster movie?? he says he made the right decision. what a loser. i guarantee as soon as metallica hired rob trujillo and he knew there was no chance he was getting back into the band he went into a deep depression. what a douche!!

reply

LOL. Rob Trujillo. The bass playing crab-man. I can never take a Metallica concert seriously anymore because of the way Trujillo wanders around the stage like a gimp.

Newstead left coz during the whole time he was in Metallica he never truly felt accepted in to the band and obviously didn't like the direction the band was going.

actually he left because james was a control freak, which ended up getting addressed as a result of him leaving. sacrificial lamb and all that.

btw i like how james is blatantly hammered during this gig and as u see from the bonus feature on the band before the show, kirk and lars are high as kites. funny as.

Ive had this on vhs for like 9+ years now or so, it was the first metallica video I would buy (Reload was the first album I bought, I became a fan in late 97)
I just rebought it on dvd, love this concert.
But Seatlle 89 from Live **** is the best.

Lars sprays the drink from his mouth onto the fans. As much as I like Metallica and this concert I wouldn't like being spat on very much EVEN IF it was Lars.

btw I loved the ANGLE feature on the DVD.
