Whats the true ending?

I was told that the original ending was Meryl dying, but with MGS4 I see her in it and I wonder, perhaps the other ending was real. So I just want to know the truth. Which ending is the real ending? Lol.

The Meryl ending is the official ending. In fact, if you call Otacon during the fight with Olga in MGS2, he'll say something like: "She kinda reminds me of--" Snake interrupts him with..."I'm through with tomboys!"
