I'm from Michigan...

And oh my God, this is almost a documentary! So true, so funny. I've never really heard much about the Bearwoks (sp?) but I've heard the name though.

That makes me want to go to Call of the Wild....

I realize this post is like two years old, but I wanted to feel special or something like that. :-p

It was me! I was the turkey all along!

I'm from the Downriver area, south of Detroit.

I've spent most of the "GOOD" parts of my life up north, and this movie made me very "homesick" to get up past the Straits.

I'm from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and I have uncles who literally live and breathe this movie. I hunt in central WI, and we can see some yuppers. You can always tell the difference between them and "cheese heads", yuppers have that funny accent like the minnesotans, although I was born in WI and think the cheese head is a stupid and corny concept. But Milwaukee is different from the rest of the state, the city of beer :-D

Grand Rapids native here ... I'm 26, and sticking in this state until I'm buried. Great bar scene (it's a mini-Chicago), the lake right next door, and ... of course ... the perception of the hicks above the bridge. ;)

The word is "Bear Walks" They are forest spirits that the Potowatami and Chippewa tell about. And also, the word "upers" is usually spelled "Yoopers".

Wayne/Westland area, my mom was born in Escanaba and would tell me stories about growing up in the U.P. : Snowbanks higher than the cars parked next to them on the side of the street. Double-decker snow-plows to move all the lake-effect snow that hit every year. She said that a snow plow even got stuck in the snow once, the snow was so high.

Escanaba is in the banana belt. They don't get any snow there. Watch the weather maps; there will always be a green mass over Alger County. We called it the Alger County Blob. We usually rivaled the Keweenaw. It has snowed in every month of the year in Alger County. Old guys told me about Fourth of July fireworks lighting up snowflakes. There are pictures of snowbanks up to the tops of telephone poles. One day they wouldn't let us out of school until we made it to one-o'clock so it would count as a full day of school. Snow was piling up. The power went out. We were herding into the gyms, but they kept us there until it was a full day. On my way home, dropping off a friend, I got stuck--on the highway. I didn't leave the road, mind you. The car just couldn't push the snow any further. We dug furiously, but when we got one tire cleared and moved on to another, the first one got drifted in before we could do the second. The car sat there for four days until the county got around to clearing the road.

reply

Oh, sorry to knock your mom, but Escanaba doesn't get lake-effect snow. The wind usually comes from the North/North-West. It comes off of Lake Superior.

That I would have to agree with on the differences between different sides of the state. I was born and raised in Flint for 16 and a half years, then moved all over after I lived in Harrison for about 2 years. Since 1998, I have lived in Mt. Pleasant, but still travel to some parts of Michigan once in a great blue moon. Now, Escanaba I have never been to, but I have heard Da Yoopers, and they get me laughing all the time, which I guess some people don't understand about that, cuz most people I talk to aren't originally from Michigan.

Now, concerning the snow part, I do understand you all get a lot of snow up there. I had a friend who lived in Manistique and he said they got wicked snow up there every year that didn't melt til like the middle of July every year, one for the trees and two because of the cold. I've been to St. Ignace, but never up to Soo or anywhere west of St. Ignace, but I know here in Mt. Pleasant depending on the weather, we can get at least 2 feet of snow hereat one time and it can pretty much get cold, but I know you all get really cold up there in the U.P. I would eventually like to get up toward Iron Mountain/Ishpeming/Manistique/Escanaba area one of these years just to see what it's like, but probably chances are, I will never make it, but then I would Love to have some of Da Yoopers CD's, cuz to me, I think they're funny. I especially like Deer Camp, lol!

What a great movie. I'm originally from the thumb and now live in Clarkston but spent nearly every duck and deer season near Felch MI. Our camp was about the same as the Soady's. Watching the movie makes me homesick for deer and duck seasons!
