Thoughts about Gorbachev

The crisis moment & point of departure into alternate history by this mockumentary is after the first mass deminstration in East Germany on October 7 and in Russia at the same moment, Gorbachev is swiftly removed from power by hardliners. Months of crisis follow leafing to war in 1990.

It would have been just as plausible for the alternate history to keep Gorbachev in power right up until November 1 then have the coup d'etat in Moscow and stepping up of USA-USSR tensions because of miscommunications on November 2. This could have been followed by USSR ground invasion of West Germany ob November 3-4 and conventional bombing runs over Brussels, London and Paris on November 5. Then an exchange of tactical nuclear bombs by both sides on their armies on November 6 and hours later full scale attack s on civillian and military targets around the world. It could have all gone down in less than a week with the Berlin Wall never being opened up.

My thoughts on Gorbachev is that he may have come a lot closer to being overthrown in 1989 than we'll ever know and it was fortunate he presided over the dissolution of the USSR in a relatively calm, orderly way through 1990-91.
