Just watched / First Comment ??

Wow! The second time in a week where I get to post the first comment on the IMDB message board. That doesn't happen to me often!

Just watched this movie first time, last night (I am trying out the Amazon Prime Online Streaming of movies as part of their 30-day free trial, so am trying to get in as many free movies as I can within the 30 days :)

Anyway, this movie unfolded just about the way that I thought it would.

I agree with the IMDB reviewer about both the character of Marian (as played by Deborah K.U.) and Nina (as played by Brooke Shields).

Marian WAS annoying, speaking barely above a breathy whisper throughout much of the movie, and almost every line she spoke was apparently supposed to be witty or clever, and that got old fast. Deborah K.U. looked good in the movie, but her dialogue was just too stilted.

Brooke gave a fine performance -- a more 'natural' portrayal than I generally have seen from her after becoming a full-fledged adult. Her portrayal of the somewhat bitter, prodigal daughter was very well-played.

Gena Rowlands is always splendid, but her dialogue, although spoken with more spunk and volume than Marian's, was again a lot like Marian's -- full of witticisms and mature wisdom at every turn.

The pacing was slow, but that is to be expected from this kind of walk-and-talk, multiple character drama in the country. I don't mind slow pacing in a movie of this ilk.

I just wish that the script writer would have taken a breather every once in awhile from the forced clever lines s/he put into the mouths of some very talented actors, and had interjected some 'normal' people-speak.

Oh, and D.B. Sweeney is handsome as ever, but unfortunately his character is only shown in a few flashback scenes. I must say, though, that he and Deborah K.U. together really had some chemistry going on, although they are not meant to be lovers in the story.

JMHO!
