My main problem with this movie...

...is that i can't figure out why so many people are so hard on this movie. So many negative online reviews on the net. Sure the whole "banned in the UK so it must be really bad" marketing gimmick is a load of sh!t, but you'll find that with a lot of these movies. Trust me, very few of them will live up to the hype, so just ignore it & choose a movie for reasons other than it being a previously banned video nasty.
Admittedly i am a bit of a gore hound, which this movie doesn't deliver on. I used to skip school & go to the long extinct grubby local independent video library (where the owners would be smoking inside LOL)& grab five of these kinds of movies at a time for $5 & pedal my a** home on my Mongoose BMX with a shopping bag full of videos on my handle bars. I grew up in Australia in aan era when TV had the "Adults Only" or A.O. rating (no M or MA) & 'everything' on TV was cut. All horror & even some action movies were edited so that there was absolutely no onscreen violence when aired on TV & the F word was not permitted on any station at any time slot, even after 10:00pm. Half the VHS releases of these kinds of movies were cut too. So in a way i was used to not getting what i was watching these movies for. Now with DVD though & almost everything getting uncut releases, i think people have come to expect a bit much, especially when they see the word "UNCUT" on a DVD cover, i'm guessing especially those who are half my age who don't know what it's like to have grown up with the Video Nasty hysteria & over the top censorship. Not every movie from the the 70s to the mid 80s was a total blood bath & the stuff cut from half those movies was usually nothing to write home about... just the censors over reacting to nothing, that's all.
Ok this movie is slow & the scenes inside the mansion where the girls are playing Scrabble on the floor while the posh old ladies play piano are pretty dull & dreary. And anyone who watches these movies for acting & dialogue is obviously unhinged themselves. But the stereotypical eerie early 80s synth music is great & that ending was worth sitting through the movie for. I mean geez it's a low budget B grade film & back in those days low budget really meant low budget, not like now... what the hell are people expecting.
If you want gore, go get hold of an uncut version of Nightmare In A Damaged Brain (goodluck with that, DVD releases are all cut) a great slasher that really delivers on the gore, or something by Lucio Fulci or one of the other great Italian directors. I'm at the point now though where i think i've exhausted almost every half decent excessively gory movie out there, so now it's just pot luck & i'm looking for movies that have some decent atmosphere & that i can actually sit through... believe me there's a lot worse movies out there than this. Trust me after seeing literally 100s & 100s of these you may look back on this one & think it's not so bad.
