if Tenacious D had been a serious band

If Jack Black really made Tenacious D into a serious band, it probably would have done incredibly well. Songs like "Tribute" are not just some stupid song, but it's really, really good musically.

It's almost a shame that Tenacious D was not so serious about making music

or maybe not. I still laugh hearing "Sasquatch"

tenacious d is a serious band and they did do well dumass

if?

reply

WELL
TALKING FROM YOUR POINT OF VIEW
THEY DONT HAVE THE SERIOUS LOOK
SO THEY PROBABLY WOULDNT HAVE BEEN POPULAR SERIOUS
IM NOT SURE
THERE WAS A TIME WHEN JACK BLACK WAS SERIOUS IN HIS EARLY MOVIES
MAYBE THEY WILL BE SERIOUS SOME DAY

reply

"IF"!!! HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAH
They´ll 'rock your friking sock off'!

reply

Um...I'm sorry are you suggesting that the mighty D aren't serious??? I'd be very careful about saying that. After all they got to where they will soon be again with the assistance of the dark lord. Watch your step my friend. Just a warning...

reply

i think wat he means is if they had sung songs about more serious matters kinda like the doors or jimi hendrix or something, cuz theres that hint of humor in all of their songs and i think he means if they had taken that humor out.

reply

Which would have made them about 1/8 as fun.

Seinfeld you magnificent bastard!

reply

if the d would have done anything differently they wouldnt be the greatest band on earth. theyre the only band i know of that can kill a yak from 200 yards away...with mind bullets.

reply

Their lack of "seriousness" is what makes them great. They, like Weird Al, are immenseley talented musically but choose to do what they LIKE to do, rather than what they would have been EXPECTED to do, and this makes them genuine.

Their silliness isn't a copout but a choice they made, and that makes them all the more awesome.

reply

Hell Yes...

I always love finding someone who said exactly what I was thinking.

Long live the D!

reply

If you look at their latest album versus this show, many of the songs are somewhat serious in nature. One thing that makes The D great is that they can write songs about the dumbest things imaginable, yet take it completely seriously. "The Road" and "Kyle Quit the Band" are good examples.

I agree, IronPotato. I've had this conversation with mates and if Tenacious D had serious content in their songs, the music would be lauded as some of rocks greatest. That being said, they use mostly original music and riffs and they sound utterly awesome. A lot of what makes them such a great band, though, in most peoples minds IS their content. Kielbasa sausage was a really *beep* awesome song in terms of the music composition and i laughed my *beep* ass off listening to it. Unfortunately, though, this is the same reason that their album is mainstream. Thank god for Tribute though :D

Anyway... all I wanted to say is Tenacious D rule supreme!!

And that other dude's post about them being the only band that can kill a yak.... HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

Well, now that their new Pick of Destiny rock opera came out in stores, I must say that these guys have gotten way better. The humor is still there but the quality of the songs is outstanding.

yup, JB writes boss songs, and KG can really play very well. these guys are bad@ss

Tenacious D are the greatest band in the world but when you beat the Devil
at his own game you have to suffer the consequences they defeated the almighty

It's not because they're not serious, it's because of the vulgarity. Like Nik68 said, musicians such as Weird-Al don't make 'serious' music, but they still are successful. If the D had more songs without pervasive cussing, they would probably be more popular.

yeah i do kinda agree, i like their songs and they're totally awesome, but i think they could be better if they cut SOME of the joking around out. in the new album, pick of destiny, there's a lot of hilarious *beep* but there's also insanely awesome music. just generally speaking of the music quality, kickapoo, master exploder, the last minute of papagenu, and beelzeboss are the best songs on there. i'm not saying the other songs are bad, but if they played more songs like the ones i listed they'd probably be a little more popular because they're still awesome musicians and rock hard. for example wonderboy's an awesome song and doesn't need any comedy added to it because it's so insane. i'm trying not to sound like i want them to quit being funny, because comedy's kinda the heart and soul of tenacious d, but i know what you're talking about and kinda agree with you when you say they would be better if they were a little more serious.

The music Tenacious D makes is just incredible musically. Every song they make is just amazing mix of guitar, drums, and the harmonies are just sick. Like in the Final Boss song the whole We are the D part is just musical genius. I really hope these guys come out with another album cause i guarantee it will blow most of modern music out of the water. Damn makes me think hwo much a lot of music today is just pathetic compared to what these two guys come up with.

If Tenacious D made serious songs, they wouldn't be Tenacious D.

Simple as that. ^_^

OK I think a lot of people are missing the point here.

I love Tenacious D to death. They are freaking hilarious. But they are a comedy act, the point is to make you laugh.

What a few people are saying is that they really have the musical talent behind them to where if they wanted they could easily be on the same level as bands like...I dunno.... Foo Fighters and like...I dunno Incubus? Hell even some of their stuff sounds Zeppelinesque!

So no one is ASKING them to change, but it would be an intersting experiment to hear them play some non-comedy sounding songs as well! Then they'd be a force to be reckoned with!

okay it sounds like some people have no idea about rock when they are talking about the D

Now I've been a fan since the show came out on HBO....actually you can technically say I've been a fan longer before because they were in BioDome and were funny as hell and this was before ANYONE KNEW IT WAS TENACIOUS D....for all we know it could have been the mellow sounds of the Kyle Gass Project.

Tenacious D is NOT A BAND, as in they are not musicians who are to be taken seriously like Led Zeppelin. They are an act that is meant to make people rock out and laugh at the same time. Some call it "Mock Rock" and that is what the D founded and does best.

For all who love Tribute, obviously you don't realize that a lot of the song comes from Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven. That's why it's so great, because Stairway to Heaven in terms of guitar solo is considered the greatest rock song.

Kyle Gass and Jack Black are not musicians such as Huey Lewis in which they do acting on the sideline. They are primarily actors who do music on the sideline. That's why there is the Tenacious D show and POD. It's about a band who thinks that they are the greatest band on earth even though they don't play bad, they're lyrics are a joke and it ruins the song that's why the D is so funny. It's the egoism of the D that made the show and movie so great.

People please understand the D is an act that has had some success musically. For the record I don't listen to their LP's because they suck compared to the show's version. The D needs to come out with an Unplugged album so I can finally buy one of their albums. For me the electric guitars, bass, and drums ruin the essence of the D. They rock out with the duo acoustic guitars "Johnny Rivers" style

band (noun) -
a group of instrumentalists playing music of a specialized type

Sorry bro, they're a band. How can you say people who have so far put out 2 albums and an EP aren't a band? Maybe they started out as a musical comedy act but they have definitely crossed the line into band.

Also the album version of Tribute doesn't have the Stairway parts in it. The general public is more familiar with that version of the song than the "Greatest Song in the World" version from the TV show.

People who sit there and say "What if they were more serious" don't understand that the comedy and the swearing is an integral part of what makes the D good.

*beep* Oath
The D rocks harder than most so called "rock" bands these days
Although I have often wondered why they haven't released some serious material (that's not to say the comedic songs are bad, far from it)

I also think that Kage doesnt get enough credit. I believe hes the true genius behind Tenacious D I mean come on that guy can shred the hell out of an acoustic which is no easy feat. But I do love Jack Black and have followed his career closely and although Brutal Legend was a fairly mediocre game Jack Black's is brilliant as Eddie Riggs which makes it worthwhile AND even Kage gets a cameo.

Anyway heres hoping the D continues to blow my mind
