The Meaning of the Ending - views anyone?

I am sure this topic was discussed before.

Regardless, I am hoping for this thread to be friendly for people to discuss.

Anyway, after watching the whole thing and watching each character ending up terribly and badly, the moment it showed the dream of the mother being on TV live with the host and the audience who applauded endlessly. And then the son came in as a successful businessman, making the mother soar with joy. The host continued talking about them as they both reunited.

The moment they held each other in front of the audience faded into blackness before the rolling credit.

As a Deaf person, I retold that story with my friend who loved this film as much as I do. But, I retold in ASL (American Sign Language) version following the way it ended.

When I signed the "fade" and then I said as my friend said at the same time: IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN............

We both looked at each other and said "WHOA!" because we said four same words at the same time...

So, that, to me, is what the ending signified.

Any thoughts?
