when he takes his clothes off for abbe

was soooooo intense! enough said

reply

I found it quite funny and intense in an odd way. I didn't think that he was actually going to take off his clothes in front of him like that. And it's not about his age, it was about his whole attitude during that scene.

That scene was intense...AND hot! I was lovin' it...god he's gorgeous! He has a nice ar$e ol' Geoff. Yes I know I'm sad, but hey I can't help it, I'm a Rushy!

In one of the documentary extras on the DVD the costumer for the film says something like "he wears his skin like other actors wear their clothes".

I loved that scene :D

reply

I guess that scene was kind of ruined for me because it's been quoted so many times on the Rush board that I knew what was coming. So I couldn't laugh at that quote, and I knew that he was going to continue to take off his clothes. Still, I can see how people would find it intense. I did find other scenes very intense.

reply

Geoffry was fantastic as always, but what about Joaquin, his eyes (sigh) that intense gaze of his was so penetrating, especially when he was almost tearing up out of frustration and humilation. Oh he sooo gorgeous, how can you guys be entranced by Geoffry when Joaquin is in the room.

J-men forever!!!

reply

Don't get me wrong here, I love Joaquin, but Rush is a superior actor, and the scene was centered around his blatant disregard for anyone but himself. *shrugs* To each their own, but I believe that this particular scene was meant for you to be entranced by Rush.

It was me! I was the turkey all along!

reply

"but what about Joaquin, his eyes (sigh) that intense gaze of his was so penetrating"

Joaquin was in that scene!? There was someone else in the room!? What, could have fooled me!

"how can you guys be entranced by Geoffry when Joaquin is in the room."

Quite easily I assure you! Rush is a screen God and a sex God!

"but I believe that this particular scene was meant for you to be entranced by Rush."

I thought that was the point of the entire film...

But seriously, (gosh I'm being serious when we're talking about Rush getting his gear off!?) yeah that scene definitely showed his egotistical nature, self-indulgence and the fact that he cared little for anything or anyone but his own selfish pleasures.

Proud Rush fan since 1998.

I too, was more drawn in by Phoenix. The Marquis is teasing him, tempting him, trying to push him, and it's working. It's cruel, certainly to see the Abbe being essentially bullied into this uncomfortable confrontation. It was not meant to be sexual, but the Marquis certainly makes it so, and you see the horror in Joaquin's eyes. His eyes speak volumes, if you look too deeply into them, you won't even hear the dialogue--but then again, Phoenix doesn't need any dialogue.

"Why would a banana grab another banana? Those are the kinds of questions I don't want to answer."

reply

I know, his eyes said it all, but both of them were electrifying in that scene. Geoffry is unsurpassable but Joaquin's eyes....they could melt icebergs and blow up cars, hehehe.

The thing I found really interesting was that the Marquise' death unhinged the abbe's own insanity; their destinies were intertwined in the sense that the marquise' downfall (death) coicided with the abbe's downfall.

"you're too tense darling you could do with a long slow screw"

reply

I think the Marquis' death was the final catalyst that lead to the Abbe's demise. He was already pushed to his brink by his desire and torment over Madeleine, but the Marquis death certainly pushed him over.

"Why would a banana grab another banana? Those are the kinds of questions I don't want to answer."

reply

I agree bemorecynical2001. I have always thought that the Marquis was the catalyst for the Abbe's arc. To me, the character with the most complete arc is the real the subject of the film.

He stripped because the priest ordered him to, to deprive him of his remaining writing materials.

If you mean the striptease fashion in which he undressed, he did it largely to demonstrate that, while they could take away his quills, his clothes, everything he owned, they couldn't deprive him of his own demonic sexuality, which was what they really feared. So long as the Marquis could still parade himself and tease as he did, to embarrass and unsettle the Abbe, he still had power over him: naked and deprived as he was, he was still in control, and it's only when the Abbe is on his way out (and no longer in close proximity) that he's able to recover some equanimity and raise his voice to insult the Marquis.

Also, probably because he still had the faint hope of arousing the Abbe's sexual interest. For which you can't really blame him.

[deleted]

Oh I think he could swing quite eagerly in either direction, both in the film and in real life. Did you miss the scene where the Marquis yells "Bugger me then"?

In real life, the Marquis was very fond of buggery (both giving and receiving) and there's no reason to think that the Marquis presented in the film wouldn't have *beep* the Abbe given the chance.

Now cure me of my madness or I won't put my shoes on, ever.

reply

to "bugger" is to have sex with. Brit slang really. In this case, referring to anal sex.

reply

[deleted]

Gross, perhaps - it's really a matter of taste - it's also extremely popular. Some people find fellatio gross. Some people don't like to kiss with tongues. C'est la vie.

For the record, "well, bugger me" is also a British expression of surprise and disbelief, just in case anyone visiting from abroad should hear the phrase and mistake it for an invitation.

reply

> to "bugger" is to have sex with. Brit slang really. In this case, referring to anal sex.

Buggery is another word for sodomy, or male-male anal sex.
But in slang, it is also a mild expletive, expressing surprise (bugger me!), annoyance (bugger off!), mechanical failure (its buggered), or pain (hurts like buggery).

reply

I never thought about it before but if you take the word for what it truly means, in this case soddomy, then when you look at all those expressions and use the word in its correct way - they actually make sense!!

I.e - wouldnt you be surprised if someone buggered you?! wouldnt you be annoyed if someone tried to bugger you? wouldnt you stop working for a bit if you had been buggered? and with a few enquiries you can get imperical evidence that being buggered would hurt! LOL - sorry couldn't resist, I use that word all the time and I'd honestly never thought about what it meant properly - well bugger me O.O Hehehehehehehe

Wow, Geoffrey was so *beep* sexy! I didn't think they would show him completly naked, but when I saw everything, I started to switch on!

He has a great posterior! He should do more nudity! Anyone agree with me?

The only responsible for The Abbé's fall was the doctor who pushed him to be the man he didn't want to be

He liked the Marquise and let him writte, it was the doctor who told him that he wasn't taking care of the Ayslum well enough so with his desperation of protecting Madeline and not letting the doctor making his rules there he started to act like him and it drove him crazy that all these things he did were against his principles.

The Marquise Noticed how manipulated he was be the doctor so thats why he challenged the abbé.
It was like are you shure want to be like the hypocrite doctor, The marquise was angry of loosing an Ally.

He couldn't publish his novels with only Madeline helping him he needed the abbé as well

While tempted by the Sade's glorious, uninhibited, anarchic madness, I was more drawn to Abbe de coulmer.

Knowing the Sade's nihilistic approach to life, he would throw me aside like a piece of meat once through with me. The Abbe however was in possesion of the kind of hope and optimism that I have long envied and been lacking in myself. (when in reply to the Sade's 'we eat, we *beep* we *beep*, we kill, and we die' he says 'but we also fall in love. We write symphonies, we build cities, and we endure' I fell a completely and utterly in love.)Thats the kind of man you want to hold close, and keep safe from all the harm and the hurt.

And on a more perverse note, I feel that I could cure him of his prudishness. The Sade was right in that no man is infallable or incoruptable, and I would VERY much like to show Abbe that. Deflowering a priest has long since been a favourite fantasy of mine.

Not to mention he was HAWT. I mean really beautiful! The kind of beautiful that makes you want to learn to paint, just so that you can document that beauty! Jaoquin Phoenix is a babe!

Those are my principals. If you don't like them I have others.~Groucho Marx

On the Commentary track, Doug Wright remarked that Joaquin could have been on a fashion runway in Paris because of how beautifully his cassock flowed when he walked. It suited him.
He is gorgeous, talented and very sexy.
