One of Joaquin Phoenix's best moments [spoiler]

The Marquis's suicide by swallowing the cross. That scene where Phoenix is kneeling in that disgusting pit and howls as he hits his breaking point... The emotion in that whole scene was perfect and spot-on. And maybe I just like scenes like that, but seeing him just break down after all that's happened to him was one of the best parts of this movie. I almost thought the movie was going to end on that bleak moment before the epilogue showed up (for the record, the epilogue was a far more interesting way to end the movie than had they ended it just on the Marquis's death scene)

Oh, yes. When he tells the new Abbe' what he has witnessed.
His face was riveting throughout the exchange.

"a malcontent who knows how to spell"

Agree
Joaquin was great in this scene and also agree about the ending, I loved to hear Geoffrey's voice again.
