Silly (but valid) question...

...do you think the Marquis 'loved' (I use the term VERY loosely)Madeline or Abbe more. I just watched Casanova (the British version) and Don Juan De Marco (the Johnny Depp one) and I noticed that in each film there was a single 'conquest' who meant more to the protagonist than the others. In Casanova it was Henrietta, In Don Juan it was Dona Anna-and I was just wondering (though I know that the Marquis was hardly a great romantic like Jack or Donny) who the Marquis would choose as his.

I know he had a less turbulent relationship with Madeline who understood him and his craft-I feel that he had more of a connection with Abbe. Abbe showed him sympathy when no-one else would, and they had long discussions as to the nature of man with all the intimacy of a lover's quarell.

(Or maybe I'm making it all up, and I just like the idea of the Marquis and Abbe coupulating.) There was certainly more sexual tension there as demonstrated by the scene where the Marquis stripped for Abbe. (If de Sade was anything like me he would be greatly excited by the idea of deflowering a priest. Forbidden fruit and all that.)

Those are my principals. If you don't like them I have others.~Groucho Marx

To the Marquis, the Abbe was closer to him intellectually. The fact that the Abbe was not offended by him allowed him to be free with his conversation with him. He was amused.
The Marquis was not past have same sex relationships. The Abbe would have known this. Therefore, it would be easy for him to flirt with the Abbe. He also knew that he could make the innocent young man very uncomfortable by overt sexual behavior.
Also, the Marquis was deceiving him. They had an adversarial relationship, from the Marquis' point of view. The Abbe perceived them as friends.

Madeleine was an amusement of a different sort. She admired him. It flattered his vanity.
He lusted after her because of her purity. The challenge was what drove him to seduce her. The way Rush played him, I don't think the seduction would have gone very far. She was his partner in crime.
When she died, it was her innocence that he mourned. A pure, vibrant life cut short.

Madeleine was an object of desire. The Abbe was sport.

I think he( The Marquis) loved Madeline.

The abbé gave him the permissions he wanted but Madeline in this film was the only one who stayed loyal to the Marquis.

I think they had a mutual Atracttion and admiration for each other.
I think Madeline and the marquis loved each other but never said it.
