Joaquin's accent

What's with the British accent?

I think, because that was the accent of all the other actors, it was done for continuity. The characters are all from the same country and as the actors, with the exception of Phoenix are British, it is reasonable that he match them.

I don't think we would want a Kevin Costner as Robin Hood performance.
That would be a glaring distraction.

Geoffrey's Australian, not British.

Australia is part of the Empire, isn't it?
He's a British subject.
I didn't write English.

It's not really an empire anymore, is it? The connections they have are somewhat small and they have their own culture.

They voted against leaving the Commonwealth.
That makes them British subjects.

Australia has been independent from Britain for 110 years... But it doesn't matter, because you said, based on accent, that they were all from the same country - when they're absolutely not. You are aware Australians sound different to the British, right?

reply

I wrote that the CHARACTERS were from the same country, not the ACTORS.
Geoffrey Rush affected a British accent, clearly not his native accent.
Michael Caine affected a British accent, but not his true accent.
Kate Winslet used a British accent.
If Joaquin Phoenix had spoken American English, it would have been a glaring distraction.
This film was a mainly British production, shot in England.
What accent did you expect?

The last push to leave the Commonwealth was voted down.
The term, "Independence", was used by the Pro side of the vote.

Caine and Rush, good old professionals, kept their non-native accents almost faultlessly and Phoenix’s effort was very impressive. Winslet’s accent wandered however, from relatively Standard to Lower Thames Valley.
