Among the worst endings?

I wasn't expecting or hoping for a happy ending, so I wasn't disappointed or surprised in that regard. However, the last ~20 minutes were downright comical. It's an amusing movie throughout, but the end transitioned to a farce.

The details of the killing of Madeline were absurd and difficult to believe. The punitive tongue removal was totally out of character for the priest to order, not to mention ahistoric. The choking on the crucifix was--need I go on?

I don't regret spending a few hours with this film, but it left an acrid taste in my mouth to say the least.

here is why
MAdeline bieng murder was completly logical
Buchon got too excited the Mraquise´s story and at that time he didnt have control over himself.
so he did what the marquis said in his story.

what the abbe did to the Marquis wasnt out of character.
at that time the Abbe was a whole different man from the one we see at the begining and wanted to see the marquis paying for Madeline´s death because in his eyes the maqruis was responsible for what happened to her.

I understand Buchon becoming excited. The rationale was clear--however, I found it comical to a different degree than
the rest of the movie.

I agree - the only bit I hate - well not hate but find cheesey enough to laugh at is the Abbé becoming the new voice box for de Sade. It makes the movie cheap and well completely ruins the ending - I always fast forward through it...
LOVE the rest of the movie though xx

The end was bad, yes, I don't think it was comical, just took so many liberties with the facts and went to such extremes it turned into something grotesque, Charenton became Arkham Asylum.

Not a great ending especially as the character conveying the final message of the story to Madeline was someone intent on assaulting her. why would he be the one giveing her a direct message.
