Was this movie based on a novel?

For some reason, I just got the distinct impression that this film was adapted from a book. I did pick up on the obvious similarities between the plots of Forever Mine and The Count of Monte Cristo. In fact, I figured the entire film was a 'modernization' of that story, but no one has been able to verify that. Does anyone know if this movie was based on some romance novel?

Apparently not. The credits state Paul Schrader wrote and directed it. It lists WGA beside his name (Writers Guild of America).

There is a game that claims there are only a certain numer of plot variations and the object is to fit any movie named into one of the categories. People can't agree on the number though. I have seen there are only 7 basic plots up to about 23. So its to be expected that almost an movie can resemble another one.

Some of said that it is a sort of homage to Douglas Sirk who made these sort of films in the 1950's. Several years ago Julienne Moore and Dennis Quaid made "Far From Heaven" It went for the Sirk feel from plot to use of color, music, fashions etc.
