Love liotta and gretchen, but the direction and especially the writing and story were silly, boring and not convincing.

What the hell do you know about direction, writing a love story anyway?!? I thought it was beautifully written because it was a Loooove Story, & about this guy loving someone like her so much that he would even die for her no matter what!

I'm about 45 minutes into it and about to turn it off.
Dreadful. And it is a shame because it has a good cast.
Well when I saved it to watch, the synopsis sounded like it was something more suspenseful and with Ray Liotta and then it turned out to be a romance thing. I wonder if it was promoted as being something it wasn't which always draws the wrong audience. It was kinda slow. Not a fabulous movie but okay. I didn't care for how they ended it. Just too vague.

It's very difficult for me to picture that hack Paul Schrader as THE writer of Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Mosquito Coast. All I can say is that he must have received extensive editing help on these from his great directors Martin Scorsese and Peter Weir.
As far as those responsible for the production of this move are concerned, if it was within my power its director, screenwriter, purchaser, and main actor would never again work in the motion picture industry.
The IMDB reviewer here was very generous in awarding a 3/10 to this tripe to which, because a negative rating is not possible to give, I awarded a 1/10. The dialogue alone is rife with such philosophic linguistic gems as "Everyone is the main character of their lives." and "Refusal to love is just an excuse for cowardice." I won't even bother with what I believe to be an absolutely childishly absurd story line.
After enduring less than 45 minutes of tortuous viewing the dvd was introduced to my waste basket.
Only two things are actually knowable:

I didn't mind that line, by itself. But then he added "Emotional cowardice," which made it really bad.
I thought there was some good acting moment on the part of the two leads, but the script, direction, and music ranged from bad to terrible.
Normally films people complain about being too slow are among my favorites, but this was bordering on tortuously slow for me for the last hour. Pacing was bad.
