I understand that there are blonde hair and blue eye Jewish people. But according to her wiki page Kirsten is actually of German descent. I get that she was at the height of her career, but really?

Ever heard of authenticity, there is noting wrong with casting an appropriate ethnicity to an acting role. This happens way too often in Hollywood where they just cast anyone for the role simply because of their looks.
shareJewish is not a race,well at least not to most people,you can convert to be a jew and jewish people don't have to look "jewish".
Sorry if I am reading something negative into people on this thread,I don't get the issue.
In fact I think if she looked traditionally jewish the story would have less impact.
If they made a film about a black person and the part was given to an obviously white person that would be unacceptable nowadays.

I think the OP makes a valid point.
Six million Jews were not killed by the Nazis because of their religious beliefs. They were the victims of mass murder because of their ethnic identity, and thus it does help to cast actresses who don't look typically German/Anglo-Saxon, as German-American Kirsten Dunst does, in a story that takes place during the Holocaust, not least because there are several reports of Jewish-Germans, or at least Germans with relatively recent Jewish roots, who survived the Third Reich because they were deemed by the Nazis to be sufficiently 'Aryan' according to Hitler's eugenicists' absurd 'scientific' theories. Thus, physical appearance did matter to some degree.
And as you state, it is offensive for a white person to be given a part as a black character, so why does no one take offence when a Jewish actor/actress is denied a Jewish role on account of a gentile actor being cast?
Like others have stated, this part should have been given to Natalie Portman.
