Does anyone have any suggestions for other lesbian films that does'nt end in tragedy, I've seen DEBS and BIAC, any others?

There's a new one called "imagine me&you". That has a happy ending

reply

Yeah, I've heard of that and I plan to see it but its not out here yet. Anything else?

I've heard that "It's in the Water" was hilarious and had a positive ending, but I can't be sure since I've not seen it yet.

It is hilarious and has a positive ending, but the end is also a little sad. I don't want to spoil the movie for you, so I won't say more here.

Everything is possible, and nothing is sure.

Thx for all those titles, I think Fingersmith can be added to the gay movies with positive ending too :)

reply

Totally positive ending for the leading ladies, but stuff happens in the background; it's a bit of an AIDS movie, but overall it ends on a positive note.

And it's one of my favourite movies to date, it's just a good flick.

I replied to the comment about It's In The Water; the only potentially non-feel-good aspect of the film is the AIDS.

Though Rent was damn good, and Fingersmith is still one of my favourite lezzie flicks to date. (:

I recommend Tipping the Velvet if you haven't seen it.
Or The Incredible Adventures of Two Girls In Love

~*We were born to love one another.*~

reply

yeah i've watched that.. it's kinda funny but still does not measure up to DEBS..

reply

I think all the best movies have already been mentioned, but personally I'd recommend:

D.E.B.S.
Tipping the Velvet
The Incredibly True Adventures of 2 Girls in Love
If These Walls Could Talk 2
Better Than Chocolate

You should see Heavenly Creatures as well, but I don't really see that as a lesbian movie.

Gia is also good (and Angelina Jolie is OMG so hot in it ) but that's not the cheeriest film ever .

I'm not indecisive, I'm open minded

reply

Heavenly Creatures isn't all that positive... but I agree that Tipping the Velvet is great. And I feel dumb for asking this, but what is D.E.B.S. short for?

"LEGO-LEZZIES, UNITE!"

reply

Lol, D.E.B.S stands for Discipline Energy Beauty Strength. (I totally forgot there and had to check the trivia for D.E.B.S. )

Heavenly Creatures isn't really upbeat at all, but still totally worth seeing.

I watch this movie on a semi-regular basis, so maybe I'm forgetting, but I don't think it's short for anything. I kind of thought it was a play on calling debutantes "debs", since 4 of the 5 main characters in this movie are in a sorority at a crimefighting university. It's definitely worth seeing! It's like the smart, lesbian version of a silly teenage rom-com!

reply

I like your list, but would add "Everything Relative" to it as well.

"Mel Gibson, *beep* off"

reply

Saving Face. That has a positive ending. Half of it is in Chinese though.

reply

Recently just watched "Imagine Me & You" and really enjoyed it. Very positive ending. :)

"Mel Gibson, *beep* off"

reply

Two I enjoyed: Saving Face and Tipping the Velvet. The latter was a 3 hour miniseries, and has a very engaging main character.

Hahaha, yeah. But I LOVE Lost and Delirious ...it's my favorite movie. =)

Watch: Imagine Me & You. It's good.

I haven't seen Lost and Delirious, but I want to see it, just for one thing: Piper Perabo.

Enough said.

P.S. I love Imagine Me and You!

"All Over Me"

reply

"The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love" is a fantastic movie with a positive ending.

reply

Try "Better than Chocolate". "Bound" is another great one. I also loved Lost and Delirious, but, if I recall, it does have its downer moments. You can also try one of the originals: Desert Hearts. It's kind of corny, but it's a classic. Oh, there's also If These Walls Could Talk 2, which is three short films in one. The first is a serious downer, but the third ends on a very cheery note. As a bonus, it has a very steamy sex scene between Ellen and Sharon Stone.

reply

lost and delirious DOES NOT end happily! you'll definitely be breaking out the tissues for that one.

reply

I know this is going to sound dumb, but what does a positive ending mean exactly? The two characters end up together, the characters don't die?

reply

I think "positive lesbian film" can be defined here as "lesbian film where nobody kills themself or someone else." Think about it before you laugh: no Heavenly Creatures, no Children's Hour, no Lost and Delirious, no High Art. I'm having trouble thinking of sad lesbian films that don't involve death.

reply

You also forgot no running off with men because 99% percent of lesbian movies either end with someone dead like you said or with a guy.Though Kissing Jessica Stein still counts as a positive one because Jessica was never actually gay or bi and should have been with a guy all along.Plus Helen got a hot new girlfriend and stayed bi so that is positive.

The full of words say,how I want you...How I love you.

reply

I think that was the case with Personal Best , but which other ones?

reply

How about "Kissing Jessica Stein"? It's a very well-made film, hilarious and has a nice ending.

reply

I dunno, that one didn't really do it for me. She seemed more to be experimenting with dating women than actually wanting to be in a relationship.

reply

Totally agree Jessica wasn't even bisexual she was bi-curious at best,as she didn't even really want to have sex.She should never have dated Helen and just stayed friends,Helen was definitely bisexual and I like she ended up with a new girl.Plus I liked Jessica with Josh and glad it ended the way it did.

The full of words say,how I want you...How I love you.

reply

I don't know...did anyone else think Jessica was flirting with the cute girl in glasses at the library? I interpreted the ending as saying, now Jessica's future is wide open, but the range of what she thought was possible has been expanded.

reply

No I don't agree it made it kinda obvious that Jessica was going to end up with Josh and that she was straight. She wasn't flirting with any girl and was just experimenting with Helen,if she was going to end up with a girl it would have been Helen and she didn't.Then at the end Jessica and Helen are all giggley and gossiping about what happened when Jessica saw Josh again and gave him her email address.I definitely saw it has Jessica knew she was straight and Helen was the one who's future had been opened up and she was the one who would end up with girls.

reply

You should try "When Night is Falling" beautiful, well acted and a bit arty film (without being pretentious, just lovely), "Goldfish Memory" is a nice feel-good film, and just to see Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon snogging you should watch "The Hunger". Oh, and there's "Show Me Love", a Swedish film I absolutely adore.

reply

Definitly BOUND!!! I looooove that movie! Jennifer Tilly + Gina Gershon = one hot movie!! :)

Also Imagine me and You is a really great film, it just left the movies here in Australia and I was lucky enough to see it!

DEBS is also great!

I've heard "Heavenly Creatures" with Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey (who plays Hilary in BIAC) is good, but I'm still trying to find that one!

"I can't remember to forget her..."

reply

Show me love (F ucking Amal) is a really good movie !!!

reply

"F ucking Åmål" (have to split the word to avoid the profanity-filter) also known as "Show me love" is the best!
And I really doubt anyone ever will do it any better!

reply

OK just watched Heavenly Creatures and ummm not that positive LOL

Also I thought Kissing Jessica Stien was pretty crap, I mean she wasnt even a lesbian!?

"I can't remember to forget her..."

reply

kissing jessica stein was a disappointement, i mean it's more of a film about new york semi-intelectuals... that's mainly it. it's not a lesbian film at all. it has some good bits here and there but isn't worth the trouble.

reply

heavenly creatures is extremely good, but i'm afraid it doesn't have a very positive ending, to say the very least...

reply

Damn, I wanted to be the one to mention SHow me Love. Froma guy's point of view, a very interesting movie, and the Swedish tradiitons/living space/etc is absolutely hilarious.

"Hey you smokin Mother Nature, this is a bust!"-The Who
"The Legend will Never Die!"-Soul Calibur

reply

there's the swedish film *beep* amal", very nice. there's also a french film called "pourquoi pas moi" ( = why not me), but it's an ensemble piece featuring several lesbian couples and one gay couple. it's totally unrealistic but very much fun to watch as a fantasy. i'd definitely recommend it.
