:: ORIGINAL vs REMAKE ::

I saw the remake a couple of times but I never saw this one, the original one. Is it better than the remake or is it not worth renting?

reply

It's been awhile since I've seen it. I was disappointed for these reasons:

Pace is slow
Not scary
Tape is not as good as the one in the remake
The screenplay isn't as in depth as the remake.- The remake shows her investigating the tape much more.

reply

i prefer the original for all those same reasons.

the moral is, it's all subjective. watch the film for yourself. it's also worth mentioning that almost everyone prefers the version they see first.

a recent survey suggested that 3 out of 4 people made up 75% of the population.

reply

Personally i liked the remake a whole lot better. To me The Ring was one of the creepiest movies i have ever seen. When i saw it in theaters, a woman actually went out and was crying in the bathroom. To this day when i watch it, i still can not watch without looking away when they show their faces.

An inch. It is small and it is fragile and it's the only thing in the world worth having.

reply

I like Japanese movies and I generally prefer watching the original versions of movies but I thought The Ring was much better than Ringu.

reply

The original was waaaaay scarier than the remake!!

always humpin' the pie

reply

Me, I'd take the original of any film made anywhere in the world than an American remake.

reply

I believe there are one or two things in the original that simply get lost in the translation. I have no idea what was significant about the word "eruption," or the imagery that accompanied it, which would lead me to believe it is probably a Japanese word of which there is no English equivalent, and "eruption" was the closest match.

If you've already seen the American version, then the most obvious thing you'll notice about the original is that it doesn't involve horses (which was a central theme in the remake).

reply

Er... How about a volcanic eruption? (Exactly what the word was used to describe). The horses were probably used in the remake instead of the volcano because a volcano wouldn't fit well in Oregon.

reply

*beep* the american remake.

The original tells the story better and in a more mystique way - but it is not half as scary as the remake. I watched the remake first, many years ago, and was really horrified - especially with the scene where she crawls out of the tele. So it was with great anticipation I watched the original.
The story and the mystique surrounding this film is so intense and just works amazing - unlike any other horror film you have seen. But to use the word "horror" about it is perhaps an exaggeration... The film really isn't that scary. If I had to choose between to original and the remake, I'd probably go for the remake, but with the poor argument... - it is scarier.
If you want a thrilling, mystique, film with a story that catch your attention from the very first minute - go with the japanese version. If you want plain horror - go with the american.

reply

Japanese horrors are usually quite slow. however, atmosphere they building is something American movies never can copy. i think original was much more interesting, story was better told, it was more sad and... well it was better.

reply

When I saw remake, I was scared when I was watching this film but not anymore.
When I saw original, I was scared after watching.

reply

Ringu gives you a wierd and frightning feeling AFTER you watch it. It doesn't seem scary when you see it.
But then afterwards yyour like holy *beep* that was scary.

reply

thats the stupidest thing I've ever heard!

reply

it has to do with when the movie is done, you become very aware and your like, crap i'm alone, crap its dark, oh crap i gotta put on the lights. Really good horror films develop a sense of Paranoia that continues until after the film. Unfortuneatly most American moviemakers just go for the cheap scare that'll make you jump and then u forget about it

I rented Ringu thinking it would be better than the remake because I hear a lot of people say that Japanese movies are SO scary...but this one was disappointing. In The Ring, I liked how the corpses' faces were all twisted and grey. But in Ringu, their mouths are just open. And we see a lot more of Samara in The Ring, than we do Sadako in Ringu. And the cursed video was WAY eerier in The Ring than in Ringu. And I liked how in The Ring, Naomi Watt's character noticed little things that were in the video after she watched it...like the fly on the screen and she saw the ladder in the barn. Although I do have to say The Ring Two wasn't very good at all. Maybe because it was directed by the same guy who directed Ringu.

reply

But what the CRAP was the dealy with the HORSES in the remake?

The first Ringu is not that great, but the second one is a lot creepier IMHO. Rinu - Baasudei (Ring - Birthday) didn't creep me out that much either. Felt a lot like a romantic horror film.

I gotta admit that I liked the make up in the remake a lot better though.

reply

The original is definitely the best, the Japanese knows hoe to scare people, not American crap remakes!

The original is best. Japanese film-makers seem to rely less on CGI, instead using methods that are guaranteed to scare. Honestly now, how many people here had hairs standing on the backs of their necks, due to Ringu's sounds? I know I did.

reply

Yeah, Ringu's sounds really stood out.

But in all honesty, I watched Ringu yesterday for the first time.

Alone, and in the dark.
I only jumped once and that was towards the end with Sadako coming out of the TV.

It did leave me with a slight feeling of dread for the next couple of hours though.

If you want a really creepy jap-horror movie, go and rent Ju-On.
Jesus, that movie had me creeped out from the beginning.

reply

Yeah, I have Ju-On too, and that's a creepy movie

reply

not even close, the original OWNS the re-make, the only thing better in the remake was the cursed video, nothing else, the remake never got me scared, just interested because i could watch beatiful naomi watts an entire movie :O

If you're american, between 14 and 25 and usually enjoy watching the so-called traditional horror movies, I'd say you would prefer the remake. It's much more explicit, has many more scary moments and its structure is more or less the one you're used to. Now if you want to see a movie with some depth and artistic input and also be scared, although much more subtly, I'd reccomend the original. It's not for everyone though: not that's something elitistic or anything, it's just that its genre is not much appreciated by mainstream. To tell the truth, there are some parts of The Ring I preferred over Ringu's equivalents, but in overall, Ringu freaked me out much more deeply. They both are a good thrill, anyway.

Now what I would _really_ reccomend is to watch Ringu, Ringu 2, Ring 0 and Rasen. XD But I understand that would be difficult.

Japanese version every time. The remake is a joke and just makes people think the original is just as bad. A seriously bad remake if you ask me

reply

The remake was scary at times when you watch it but the original scares you beyond the screening. My friend was afraid to go to the toilet alone (fear of mirrors) for weeks after she watched the original.

I'm not easily scared but "The Scene" in the original was easily one of the scariest horror scene I've seen.

reply

Sadly because of the lack of originality in Hollywood nowadays we have to endure countless and some times unnecessary remakes not only of classics but foreign movies as well.
Ringu is an original and, just like the case with original movies, it's hard they can be surpassed by their remakes. Of course The ring was absolutely scary and made me scream a lot when I saw it (and I absolutely adore Naomi Watts), but Ringu manages to crawl inside your skin, that's what (and I don't get tired of saying) an original horror movie is supposed to do.
Imagine (and I'm speaking to the 30 something generation) a remake of The exorcist, never in a million years will they be able to create the controversy and the powerful impact this movie had. Same goes for every single remake past, present and future.

reply

The original is INFINITELY better than the piss poor remake. People seem to need things spelling out for them, theu have no imagination or ability to interpret .... which is why, I think, the remake sucks arse, loses any depth and is deeply, deeply UNscary.

I hated the remakes of darkwater, the grudge, insomnia, tcsm, the omen, i hate the fact that they are remaking films like la folie pas du tout, funny games ... (again, Naomi Watts, QUEEN of the sub standard remake ....)... AUDITION of all films ....

I mean, come ON, people can't be arsed to read sub titles so they settle for utter bumpf instead?
