OK, so.. why 'Ring'?

Is it because the phone rings? Or because if you were to look down the well it would be a circle aka a 'ring'?

OK, so I just googled it and apparently its because the girl would have seen a ring of light as she looked up the well as it was being sealed, but that sounds like an explanation that may be from the US remake (which I haven't seen) as there was certainly nothing like that hinted at in this film.

I think you're right that it was when she's in the well it's the way the light looks above and the sound of the telephone ringing. I also think because the whole thing is like a continuous loop (having to make endless copies of the tape and show it to more and more people) it could be called a ring.

But is it literally called 'Ring' in Japan? I doubt their word for the sound a telephone makes is also the word for a circular object AND is also the word for a continuous loop.

Ring refers to the smallpox virus that kills the viewer of the video in a week. It is a mutated strain of smallpox that is shaped like rings under an electron microscope. The movie kept the name, yet cut out all plot points that gave it it's name.

Roff.

Yea it's the ring of the well. The poster shows it too.

I agree with all of the above re: phone and well shape; however, the curse is a ring / cycle. Spoilers. Think about the circularity of the curse itself.
